Glacier Wilderness Resort

Best Things Nearby:
Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake.

Best Things About the Resort:
The truly wilderness feelings of the grounds and its close proximity to the park.

Resort Experience:
Ten miles east of West Glacier on Montana Hwy 2 are ten log cabins nestled back in the trees. The grounds are large with a playground area, indoor swimming pool, volleyball court, horseshoes, and a hiking trail that includes a very fine cascade back in the woods. Children could stay busy here for days.

The cabins are situated so there is quite a bit of privacy. The wildflowers and shrubbery are much as they would appear in the wild. There is enough room to park two cars at the cabin. The large front porch, which spans the width of the cabin, has a hot tub, a picnic table, and a grill.

Entering the front door, you find yourself in a large living area. The living room has a sofabed, but we did not use it. There was wood already cut for the fireplace in a woodbox that could be accessed from inside. It was very cold when we first arrived so we built a fire to help warm ourselves quickly! We enjoyed a fire one other evening as the nightly lows were in the 30s and 40s in June. It took several hours to warm the cabin to a comfortable temperature the night we arrived, but once we got it warmed up, it seemed to retain the heat very well.

The dining area table seats four and has a leaf to expand it. The furniture is very nice and decorations tend to mountain decor. My only complaint is that the lighting is insufficient at night. A breakfast bar separates the kitchen from the dining area. The kitchen was well-equipped.

A bedroom and a large bath complete the downstairs. The bedroom has an outside entrance of its own. As it warmed up by the end of our stay, we greatly enjoyed opening the windows at night to sleep by the gurgling of the stream nearby. The bathroom had a tub and laundry facilities. Laundry soap was provided, but our washer didn't spin out very well. The moose towels were thick and fun.

Upstairs was another bedroom and 3/4 bath. This area is a loft that is open to the living room, but the bed area is far enough back that you can't see from downstairs. There was also a sitting area near the edge of the loft.

We really enjoyed this place. My boys would have loved it when they were young. The resort is out in the "boonies," but if you are a nature lover, it is a wonderful place. We even saw deer on the grounds.

Glacier Wilderness Resort

If you want to visit Glacier National Park, this resort is an excellent base. There are 10 cabins on site, 8 two bedroom and 2 one bedroom. The unit we stayed in was a one bedroom. The owner lives on site, but office hours are limited. There is a recreation room next to the office, which has the only telephone (pay) on site. There is a pool table, couple of pinball machines, old books, jig saw puzzles, childrens board games available. But it was not heated while we were there and the only traffic I saw was people using the pay phone (there are not phones in the cabins). There is another building with a pool, but we never used it.

The cabins are grouped together, but have a lot of trees and bushes between them. Parking was at the back of the unit, and you walk into the nice sized bedroom with lots of closet and drawer space. A large bathroom is next to that with a tub/shower and big, fluffy towels. The washer/dryer are in here. You walk into a great room with kitchen, dining room and living room. The kitchen is very nice, everything you need including oven, microwave, dishwasher, and plenty of cooking utensils. The stereo/CD player is in a cupboard above the refrigerator, which was very difficult to use. I had to stand on a chair just to reach it, and still could not see the inside of the CD player. The TV was fed by satelite and had a VCR. The office had a few movies to rent, but was never open when we were home at night. For $15.00 additional, you have access to firewood to burn in the fireplace. The wood is stacked in a building close to the units, but you have to split it. The tools are available for you to use, and it didn't take much effort to split, if you know what you are doing. But the wood is pine and not very dry, it takes some experience to get it to burn. We had a fire every night and really enjoyed it. It is well worth the effort. The sofa (it is a sofa bed) was comfortable and there were a couple of other nice chairs. These are log cabins and the walls are all either log or paneling, we found the rooms to be dark because of this. But it is very pretty and the ceilings are vaulted. The front porch has a hot tub, picnic table and charcoal grill. We used the hot tub every night after hiking and loved it. If you don't know how to use a charcoal grill, don't plan on grilling any food. Our front windows looked out onto a mountain and we enjoyed the sight very much. The resort is 10 miles away from the entrance to Glacier National Park.
