Located in the belly of downtown Auckland right off of Queen Street, the Fat Camel Hostel & Bar has apartment-style accommodations housing nearly 200 beds. Besides the usual big screen TV, Internet access, and vending machines, this hostel has a handful of useful amenities to offer the budget-conscious traveler. For instance, their 24-hour travel/reception desk always has at least one or two cheerful staffers (even at 3:30 in the morning!) available to answer questions and give suggestions on what to see, do, and even NOT do.
Next to the lobby is an in-house bar that pumps a decent mixture of local brews seven days a week and offers nightly meals with additional discounts for guests.
My only suggestion if you are planning on staying at the Fat Camel is to make sure you pack a pair of earplugs because this bustling hostel rarely quiets down enough to get good night's sleep.
