Description: The Maple Inn is actually two old houses that have been joined together. The original house was built in 1893 and served as a hospital from 1946 to 1976. It was converted to an Inn in 1987, and in 1988, the adjacent house was added.
It has eight large rooms, as well as a two bedroom suite with a whirlpool bath and a king-sized bed. All the rooms have private baths, although some are next door rather than ensuite.
Our room looked like something from a magazine. The walls were cranberry red with green trim and the carpet was the same shade of red. Floral drapes matched the pillows on the two single beds which also had teddy bears. An afghan was artistically draped over the back of the large chair by the bay window. The 4 piece ensuite bathroom had lots of towels as well as a hairdryer and a charming heart shaped corner shelf.
We were on the main floor, just beside the back parking lot, and it was easy to maneuver suitcases, etc. without stairs. There was a big lounge/sitting room with a TV and a VCR, and a large comfortable couch and chair, as well as more formal but less comfortable antique furniture arranged around the gas fireplace. We were the only ones in that section of the house so we had the lounge all to ourselves. The coffee table was covered with books on the history of the area and of Nova Scotia in general, and the windows along the back wall provided lots of natural sunlight for reading.
Breakfast was served in the large dining room and varied daily. The day
before had been bacon and eggs, and during our stay, we had pancakes with homemade blueberry sauce and a cold buffet of cereal, muffins and juice.
I liked the wooden lounge chairs on the front porch with their decorative maple-leaf design. It would be a nice place to laze about with a newspaper on a sunny morning. The B&B is in a quiet residential area but is only a few blocks from downtown. The rate was $84.00 (CDN) for two, but we were there during the low season so summer rates would be higher. No smoking is allowed in the house and pets are not welcome. We had a pleasant stay here and would highly recommend it.
