Shinta Mani is located behind the post office and around the corner from the Foreign Correspondence Club. It is a small, 18-room boutique hotel with very good service and a very cool social responsibility twist that I really liked. The tiny hotel also runs a hotel and restaurant school for underprivileged Cambodians, free of charge. When I asked, they said that they had about 20 students currently, and that the owner is funding the school with the revenue from the hotel.

When you first pull in, it is a bit unassuming, with a fountain in the front and a white building. Once you get in, you are greeted by two or three people around the front desk. There are three rooms to the right and seven rooms to the left, where you also see the beautiful pool and the three gorgeous spa treatment rooms, and the rest of the rooms are upstairs. The rooms are filled with dark hardwood furniture, and there are nice, small touches such as dimmer lights by the bed and nice, decorative throw pillows. The beds are very comfortable, and the highlight of the rooms is the beautiful tubs and bathrooms, which are made of solid stone (I never take baths, but with the way the bathtub looked, I wound up taking a bath everyday!).

The restaurant was excellent. I highly recommend the three-course dinners and the traditional Khemer cole slaw, which was very unique. Apparently, the restaurant was just in Gourmet magazine as one of the best places to eat in world! Wow. The chef was a Cambodian and came out to chat with us after one of our dinners there, which I thought was very exceptional. My only complaint was the long wait for the breakfast (I would have preferred something quick so I could quickly go to the temples).

I went with my girlfriend, and she raved about the spa treatment, although I don't have the foggiest ideas about spas, so I couldn't tell you about it. I did, however, really enjoy the lap pool (try to pay a bit extra and get a poolside room if you can), which was always empty.

The service was amazing, and I would have never known that many of the staff members were students, since the service quality was always high. Anyway, I highly recommend the place, and I loved the fact that my money was going back to the community and not to some big, corporate hotel chain!
