Pestana Grand Hotel (#6695)

  • June 25, 2004
  • Rated 5 of 5 by Holiday Jo from Kettering, United Kingdom
Best Things Nearby:
Within a 5 minute walking distance is a fabulous fish restaurant which is moulded into the side of the cliff. If you reserve a table you can choose to have a window seat which overlooks the highest point in Madiera. If you like seafood then this is the restaurant to go to.

Also nearby is the Lido; you just follow the sea front for about 15 minutes and you will get to this local and tourist attraction. There are inflatables in the sea which you can rest on and they also have slides attached to them for the more adventurous.

Also within the complex are tennis courts and football pitches which will keep you occupied if you tire of relaxing by the pools.

A 10 minute bus ride away is the City of Funchal and the harbour. We went in to this area every evening for our meals as we found the Old Town delightful and during the day we wandered the many shops. Also near the Old town is the local market which is a delight to walk round. You will be approached by most of the stall owners to try some of their fruits; there is no pressure though so take them up on their offer.

Best Things About the Resort:
Pestana Grand was by far one of the most luxurious hotels I have been to and at the end of a hard day's sunbathing there was nothing nicer than visiting the hotel spa. All the water contains minerals and you can just relax in the pool and be massaged by the high power jets. You are provided with a towel and most people wander down to the spa in the dressing gowns that are provided in your room.

Our Studio apartment was also fantastic; we were lucky enough to have a balcony overlooking the sea and on the hot evenings it was nice to sit out and watch the locals walk along the promenade.

Resort Experience:
Fantastic! Luxurious! Relaxing! All these words sum up the way I felt about this resort. I would certainly return and hopefully next time It will be for 2 weeks.

Our hotel room had 2 twin beds pushed together and a separate living area with TV. If you cook quite a bit on holiday then you may find the kitchen too small, but it was certainly ample enough for our usage. Our bathroom was marble tiled and had a large sink area. On the balcony were 2 wicker relaxing chairs that overlooked the sea.

There are 3 restaurants in the hotel: Morroccan, local cuisine and a la carte. All of these were relatively expensive but the food was delicious. Breakfast is served every morning in the buffet area and costs approximate 14 Euros.

In the hotel grounds contain the largest seawater pool on the island with more than enough sun loungers for everyone. If you find the sun too hot you just need to call one of the pool attendants to set up an umbrella for you. There is also bar service around the pool and an outdoor eating area which serves lunchtime snacks.

My only negative comment would be about the evening entertainment. 4 out of 7 nights there was a pianist. Although the pianist was very good, this did get slightly boring after a while. I would have preferred to have had more local entertainers. However, the service was fantastic: all the waiters and waitresses were very polite and could not have been more helpful. You could ask them anything and they would go out of their way to help.

Within the complex there is also a small shop that sells Newspapers, snacks etc but if you wish to do a grocery shop there is a large store about 5 minutes walk away.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone, any age. You will not be disappointed.... promise.

Pestana Village

Best Things Nearby:
Walking distance to Funchal old town and strolling distance to variety of good restaurants and shops.

Best Things About the Resort:
The area our balcony over looked was a grass garden filled with well stocked flower beds, rather than the traditional pool and sun loungers. You could sit on the patio and not notice there were other people around you.

Resort Experience:
Next door to the Miramar (and sharing the facilities), the Village resort consists of four-storey blocks surrounding beautifully manicured flowering gardens. The resort offers very clean and well maintained "hotel style" accommodation with a relaxing quiet atmosphere (off-peak at least).

The majority of guests were retired, which I think contributed to the relaxed and peaceful feel the resort had. Pestana Village had a completely different pace to similarly sized resorts on the canary islands where the flowers are few and far between and energetic children plentiful. We did get a few odd looks and comments about being on the wrong plane (we don’t even have 60 years between us!), but it was definitely worth a few stares for a totally relaxing break.

Resort Experience:
This was a spacious and comfortable apartment for four people. It looked as though at one time it was family accommodation: two rooms with adjoining doors, one of which has had a kitchen fitted. Unfortunately, we were not provided with bathrobes -- I'm not sure if it was because we were staying in the hotel or whether it was because we had 'exchanged.' There was daily maid service and a helpful concierge.

We were, however, harassed by a ‘holiday ownership’ salesman who had a desk in the reception foyer. We told him at the beginning of the week that we had more points than we knew what to do with, but he continually stopped us (four times one day) as we came down the stairs from our room on floor 7(actually only one floor above reception). He said he was targeting people staying in the hotel- he did not believe we were with RCI Points. It would be nice to go on holiday and relax. He really annoyed me, so much so that we would walk away and ignore him. The rep who had been assigned to us accepted the fact that we had sufficient points and did not worry us again.

Best Things Nearby:
This resort is currently under construction and expected to be ready under the first quarter of 2004. When we went there, late August, some of the apartments were ready enough to give you a vision of how they will look when done. And there's only one word: breathtaking.

Best Things About the Resort:
If staying here, I'd say it would take more than an excursion to have me leaving the resort. It's massive and the pool area will be something to remember. The two-bedroom apartment on the top floor will have a huge private terrace, and depending on owners requests, they might build a bbq area on there as well.

Resort Experience:
The Carlton Grand will be built as a Gold Crown resort and should you get restless, you have the whole island of Madeira to discover.

Pestana (who are building the resort) have a bus service going by all their current resorts, and I have no doubt that they'll include the Grand as well -- it's an easy and free way to get around the island.

And again, the food is excellent on Madeira!

Pestana Miramar (#5440)

Best Things Nearby:
Depending on what kind of holiday you're looking for, the best things nearby for me (if I'd go here on holiday) would be the pool areas. All of them are as Gold Crown as a pool area can be. The Miramar is built together with the Pestana Village (#3725) with a huge garden connecting the two resorts. There's three pool areas in the resorts, plus an indoor pool. Bars next to each of them and sun beaming down on you all day.

Best Things About the Resort:
When working for RCI you're constantly looking for things that you might have a complaint on from a member, but for the first two days I couldn't find a single thing except an unbalanced table in the lobby. They must have an army of cleaners taking care of this place! The whole resort is tastefully decorated and receptionists are extremely nice and helpful. You can also organize excursions through them.

As the two resorts are connected they use each other to make a huge complex. You have your breakfast in the Village and restaurants on both sides for variation. I shared a studio with a friend, but I did not think it was a studio until I saw a one-bedroom apartment. The studios are huge.

Resort Experience:
If I'd had more time on Madeira I'd probably write a book about the island, but this time we only had three nights and mostly work.

What I can say is that the two resorts are wonderful, the island is wonderful, and the weather is very nice almost all year round--go there! I know I will.
