As part of our air ticket, we had made a reservation at Icelandair Esja hotel, which I thought was going to cost us $75 a night. What I didn't know is that it was A) a 45 minute walk from downtown, and B) $75 per PERSON per night! This hotel was clean, but the rooms were fairly small. The hotel itself had a pretty drab exterior. Reception checked us in fairly quick. Luckily, we were able to bail out on our reservation. I told them that their own web site had told us it would be $75 per night (I was wrong) and kicked up a fuss. They didn't try to charge us - not even for the phone calls we made to the budget hotels trying to find somewhere else to go. I would primarily not recommend this hotel due to it's inconvenient location. It's a pretty long walk, unless you want to shell out a lot of money for a cab, or wait outside for a bus.

Very clean, small rooms with twin beds, large bathroom. I chose this hotel over the Loftleidir because of the location. Once in Rekjavik, I knew I made the right choice after driving by the Loftleidir. The location is not as central as the Esja. Great view of Mount Esja from my room. The Breakfast was included in package. Just a few minutes walk to the Laugardalur swimming pool and about a 10 minute walk to the Kringlan Mall.

There is a very good restaurant in the hotel with a seafood buffet of 20 or so different dishes. Staff is extremely helpful. I did not have time to use the spa facilities or take a yoga class which were also available. I was very pleased with the accommodations.

Hotel Esja

My room was a single and probably the smallest hotel room I''ve seen, but clean. The bathroom was spotless. The staff were unfailingly polite and helpful. There is a spa in the hotel that is highly recommended and reasonably priced, but I didn''t have time to try it out. It seems a little far out of the city center, but it''s a short, easy bus ride, or you can walk to downtown in 15-20 minutes. (Note on price per room: this was included in the Icelandair package, so I don''t know how much it would cost separately.)

This was the hotel we chose as part of our 'Madness package'. It was furnished in typical European tradition, meaning not as lavish as U.S. hotels but decent, with 2 single beds. The great thing about Esja was its central location to the city than the other hotel offered in the package, the Loftleidir, which was located out by the domestic airport--yuck! The bus lines run right by the hotel, and you can get a taxi at any hour. There is a decent restaurant in the Esja serving Icelandic cuisine; Scandinavian breakfast was included in our package as well.

When you stay on a stop-over tour, Hotel Esja is often picked. It's not exactly in the city center, but since Reykjavik isn't huge, it's about a 20 minute walk to Austurvollur, the city's main square. It's the equivalent of a 3 star hotel, with good quality service, a nice breakfast buffet, and helpful staff. There's also a tour reservation office in the hotel for various day-trips outside the city. The building is 'nothing special modern', but the rooms are comfortable. There are nice views on the north side of Mount Esja. There's a Pizza Hut on the ground floor that's convenient but mighty expensive. One nice amenity in the area is the swimming pool complex in the Laugadalur Park, about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. It's got a nice sauna and outdoor hot-tubs with piped in water from geothermal springs. It's open year round and is even more fun than during the summer, and is a good way to see Icelanders relaxing.
