Casa Maya

Casa Maya

We stayed in 2 rooms, the 1st was OK, the 2nd one (No 17.) was fantastic, king size bed, beautifully decorated, thatched roof, looking on to the bay with your own private hammock (one each of course), air conditioning. I could have stayed months. Add to that the complimentary use of the communal kitchen (a boon when you have been on the road for some months)& friendly staff. It is a fabulous place to stay!

Of course I didn''t actually stay here--it costs too much for me. But not for YOU--you are a real person with a life. In that enviable position, there''d be no doubt in my mind as far as where to stay on Isla Mujeres. The Casa Maya is just about perfect.
It''s not on the surf, has no towering view, is not deluxe. What it is, it''s this totally charming, comfortable, hospitable little hotel/bungalows situated on an incredibly cute little beach, just steps from everything worth stepping for.
Playa Norte, the sandy North end of the island where anybody in their right mind goes to hang out, ends up at an odd wooden bridge that leads over to an "island within an island" sort of thing, where some moron halfway built a hotel and condos and is now letting the ruins fall apart. The area sheltered by the island and separated by the bridge is a lovely round pool with white sand bottom, about a hundred meters in diameter. Surf spills into one end (over where a totally cool house sits right on the rocks) to keep the water clean and circulating, but there are no waves or currents in the pool, just shallow, transparent water with your occasional fish, skate, or crab to mess with. You can lie here and float into infinity. You can let a two year safely romp. You can pull one of the chaises out into the water. You can swim just like in a pool. The sand is nice and white and soft--and leads right into the Casa Maya for any needs you might have other than sunning, coasting, and goofing completely off.
If you want to be a fish in a bigger pond, just walk to leeward thirty feet and you''ll be right on the big beach and right in the center of the whole thing. If not, you can hang in the hammocks, or the cool, breezy rooms.
Casa Maya attracts a pretty international crowd, and you can socialize with them pretty well because the place is very homey, almost like a big summer house, rather than a hotel. There is a communal kitchen if you want to cook, a dining room, a living room with TV and VCR. It''s just one relaxed, laid-back, goof at the beach. If you want more privacy, get one of the bungalows and have your OWN beach house.
Just head out Zazil-Ha until you hit the bridge--the Casa Maya is virtually the only place with a giant stone replica of a giant Toltec stone head.
Their rates, even in high season, run from about $50 U.S. to around $120 for the suite up top, which is my idea of TOTAL beachcomber luxury. Current rates and some pics can be seen on their web page or site.
