I recently went to Chiang Mai, and I have to recommend to the Tamarind Village to all. It is not cheap, but it's comparable to plenty of the bland, soulless three- and four-star hotels in Chiang Mai that ruin the skyline. It has been designed very sensitively and reminds you more that you are in Northern Thailand, with its rich cultural history, than many of the central streets outside, which are lined with anonymous concrete blocks.
The staff was great, and the food was okay, but there's better available outside.
I booked through the following online booking agency, and it worked fine:
Chiang Mai Hotels.
