Ahwanee hotel

The Ahwanee Hotel is the best in the Yosemite Valley. However, for the price, I think the Lodge at Yosemite Valley is a much better value. The Ahwanee will cost you FOUR times what you send at the Lodge. Next time, I will be staying at the Lodge and spend my money on activities.

Ahwahnee Hotel

Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemtie National Park is the premier hotel in the park.
Opened in 1927, the build was called "one of the largest automobile challenges to date". Its massive architechture, and impressive technology (for the 1920s) led it to become one of the first "fire proof" hotels ever built. What looks like redwood all over the outside of the Ahwahnee is actually concrete and granite that has been painstakingly stained to look like wood.
The Ahwahnee is also known as the most expensive place to stay in Yosemite. Prices hover in the $350 to $400 per night.
The dining room inside the Ahwahnee is without a doubt the best you can find within 100 miles of Yosemite. The prices here too are steep, but Sunday brunch is well worth it!
The dining hall is also known for the famous Bracebridge Dinner. Since 1928 the Bracebridge Dinner has been performed based on Washinton Irving's book "A Christmas at Bracebridge Hall". Of course, this performance only happens during the Christmas holiday and recreates an 18th century yuletide feast, complete with professional singers and actors. There are five performances given, seating about 1,600 people chosen in a lottery.
Please don't miss this historic hotel, and make sure to visit the restaurant.

We had a cabin away from the main lodge - the interior was attractive and comfortable. But, the real star of the show is the lodge (it was featured in Stephen King''s movie "The Shining"). Its beautiful 1927 western architechtural stylings, antique furnishings and artworks, black and photos from the old days, and huge fireplaces are magnificent! The many rooms include the Solarium, the Great Lounge (77'' x 51'' with 24'' ceilings), and the Winter Club Room, as well as a 4 star restaurant and separate bar. It''s a great place to unwind and warm up at the end of a good winter''s day.

It''s extremely difficult to book reservations here - they allow booking 366 days in advance, and you may need it! However, we booked the same day because of cancellations due to expected bad weather. Long live spontaneity! If this is too expensive, or you can''t get in, look into Wawona, Curry Village, or Yosemite Lodge.

The gift shop has great western books and goods - we spent 1/2 hour looking around.
