Perfect Paradise

Tahiti is one of the best place to visit. All that we've seen had exceeded our expectations. We stayed 6 nights, but wished it was more. The weather was pretty nice when we landed, but it got hot as the day went on. The boat ride was very relaxing after a long airplane ride from the California.

While we waited for our room, we went on a scooter ride around the island; it took us less than an hour to ride around the whole island. We stopped along the ways to take pictures and see other different angles of the island.

It is so beautiful. The receptions lobby was nice & busy, but the seem like the have things organized. I kept seeing guest checking in & out accordingly.

We stayed in one of the over the water bungalow, it was amazing. We jumped into the ocean for a quick every morning, took a walk to the local shops, and lounge around on our balcony all day. Can't ask for anything better than that. We took in all the beautiful sceneries.

My goal was to experience what Tahiti had to offer without working too hard for it, so we basically RELAXED!!!!!

We went kayaking once, but it was too boring for me, but I had to. I'm not a water person, but again I had to try, so we went snorkeling, it was so beautiful. We saw all the beautiful fishes & other creatures I wasn't so sure about. Scared & excited all at once. Even if you sit on the beach with your feet in the water, those fishes would swim next to you. What was worse for me, was those snake-like thing in the water, it was yucky. By day 5, they surrounded every corner of our bungalow.

There was a little rain storm, while we were there. CNN (the only English channel) indicate there was a small hurricane near by, Jamaica maybe. We just got the rain, but it was still nice out. The sun shined the next day was even better.

Only complaint we had was the food, it's not Disneyland, so don't expect too much or you'll be disappointed. We purchase some sandwich items from the local store to eat during the days & order dinner from the restaurant at night. The food does need to be upgraded, but it's an island. That's all I will say.

Tahiti was our honeymoon & hopefully will be our 3rd or 5th year anniversary. For us, it was the perfect environment: less people for privacy, courteous workers, and above all a very peaceful place to relax.

Not a Moorea Pearl at All

You will agree that this hotel has significant problems and sensible travellers will do it and themselves a favour by avoiding this hotel, after reading about my recent experience at the Moorea Pearl Resort and Spa. It needs significant investment in refurbishment and new management .

This hotel was reopened five years ago, formerly the Bali Hai Hotel. It is still using outdated and extravagant marketing that no longer fulfills the promises made. It claims to be a four star hotel but the lack of maintenance, facilities etc make it the equivalent of a two star hotel charging four star prices.

On arrival I found the lobby filled with workmen and jack hammers breaking up the flooring to replace old and stained tiles. I was told the roof leaks and the floors are slippery when wet. I saw this for myself after a rain shower. The noise of the jack hammers was appalling. To my horror I was given a room close to reception. I complained and reluctantly was moved to a quieter room. The reception supervisor was very rude and unhelpful. I had three encounters with this person and each time it was emotionally draining and unpleasant.

The hotel advertised two boutiques - both were permanently closed. There was no shop available.
It advertised two restaurants one of which was a gourmet restaurant. This was permanently closed.
It offered a minibar in the luxury room. The fridge was empty and the ice tray broken. I phoned room service and asked for ice. I was told to fetch it myself from the ice machine elsewhere in the building.
The pool had insufficient pool towels. I had to go to my room to fetch my room towel.
They were unable to find an electrical adaptor for me to use New Zealand plugs and I was unable to charge my cell phone or use my computer.
There were smelly drains outside the room and in the evening on both nights of my stay, I watched two large Norwegian rats foraging in the undergrowth. On seeing the rats, I asked to see the manager.

He was pleasant but failed to follow up on his promises. He was not very concerned about the rats. He finally suggested that in compensation I should have dinner on the house. I explained I planned to have room service. He said whatever. The next day I received the bill preview and on it were the room service charges. I complained to the receptionist. I was offered dinner in the restaurant again on the house and I accepted this. It was a good meal and the service quick but then it would be wouldn't it?

The saving grace, a lovely location. The hotel could be wonderful if brought up to scratch, but make sure this is the case if you plan to stay there.

Moorea Pearl Beach Resort

The Pearl Resort was absolutely beautiful! The bungalows were amazing! There were flowers everywhere upon entering your room. It also had a stocked refrigerator, beautiful bed, sofa, TV, and a large tiled shower. Everything was perfect! There were restaurants on-site with great breakfasts! The lunch and dinner fare was acceptable. We purchased a package that included meals and wished that we hadn't. We had the best food at local restaurants.

We had fun on a sea kayak and snorkeling around the overwater bungalows. We stayed 3 nights in a garden bungalow and 2 nights in a beach bungalow. We really preferred the beach bungalow! We sat out on the deck, which was actually over the water, and soaked in the awesome surroundings!

Moorea Pearl Beach Resort

We wanted to spend all seven nights in an over-water bungalow, but there was no availability. Eventually, we booked five nights in a deluxe garden bungalow and two in an over-water bungalow.

When we arrived, we were greeted with fresh flower leis and glasses of pineapple juice. Somebody whisked our luggage away to our room immediately.

Our first five nights were in a deluxe garden bungalow. There are two units in each building, but you would never know you’re sharing a wall.

The deluxe garden bungalow has a dipping pool in the backyard. The website makes it seem very private, but in reality it’s visible to anyone. It’s still nice to have, although the water is very cold!

The bed is low to the ground, but comfortable. The TV reception is good. There’s only one English channel--CNN International. There are about five French channels with many American comedies dubbed into French.

In the bathroom, there's a shower only, no bathtub. There is no shower curtain, making it hard to shower without soaking the floor.

We moved into a deluxe overwater bungalow for our last two nights. The room was decorated with fresh flowers, and the staff was excellent about getting us moved. It had a glass floor under the coffee table so we could see the water and fish. The bathroom had a tub/shower combo. Otherwise, the room was the same as the other, except for the fantastic location! The balcony and lounges were almost always in the sun. We could jump right into the water if we needed to cool off. We could keep lying there as the sun went down and experience the sunsets in total privacy. And in the morning, we could start the day with more great views of the sunrise.

We ate most of our meals at the hotel bar. Service was friendly, but sometimes slow. One thing that irked me was that they so often messed up my order. I always order sandwiches plain, but three times my food came out with all the trimmings. They always fixed the problem quickly but never apologized.

The menu was somewhat limited, but the food was good. We usually spent $30-$35 for lunch. There was a grocery store down the street, so we usually bought something there for dinner.

I was unimpressed by the activity desk. I felt like we were getting a hard sell whenever we asked about tours. We found it was cheaper and easier to call and book tours on our own. The resort loans snorkelling equipment and kayaks. A note about the snorkelling: I really felt that it was overrated. The water was incredibly clear, but we could swim for quite a while without seeing any fish at all. When we did finally come across some, there wasn’t a wide variety or many exotic colors. The snorkelling wasn’t bad, but just not extraordinary.

Moorea Pearl Beach Resort

Moorea Pearl Beach Resort was much more than we expected. Our accommodations were fantastic. The hotel blends in with the landscape. It is refreshing not to see a long row of high-rises along the beach.

We stayed in a deluxe over the water bungalow. The decor was all in teak wood with a king size bed, a sofa and a very large bathroom with a large tub. Flowers were on our glass coffee table through which we could see the fish swimming under our bungalow. The view off of our lanai was unobstructed, just blue water for miles and miles. We enjoyed relaxing on our lanai, snorkeling off of our deck and enjoying the view. There is no need to take an expensive snorkeling trip because the snorkeling at the Pearl is excellent. It was like being in a fish aquarium. The hotel does provide free snorkeling gear and kayaks.

The staff at the hotel was very helpful. The hotel provides an activity director who will arrange any excursion you plan to take.

The infinity pool is beautiful. It looks like it is part of the ocean. The pool area usually is not very crowded, especially in the afternoon. Sometimes we were the only ones sitting there. They do offer water aerobics every morning around 9am.

The hotel restaurant is good but the menu is limited. We usually ate our meals out. I would recommend eating out especially for breakfast and lunch. There is a cafe within walking distance from the hotel that serves breakfast and lunch daily for a reasonable price ($10 each) and is very good. The name of the restaurant is Caramieline and their menu is local Tahitian. They do serve an American breakfast and hamburgers for lunch. Most restaurants for dinner do provide free pick up. Just call the front desk and they will make your reservations and arrange for your pick up.

Some of our highlights staying in our bungalow included fantastic sunsets, watching the storms come in and looking for a rainbow, listening to the ocean, relaxing on our lanai, taking an afternoon nap, room service, a different flower on our bed every evening, and enjoying the fabulous view.

Moorea is not for the party seekers. The nightlife is limited and the alcoholic drinks are very expensive. They run about $10 each.
