The Hotel Grand Chancellor is a Grand Dame of the Hobart waterfront. Sitting with only the traffic lanes of Davey Street between the hotel and the water. Rooms are large enough, and the harbor side offers a great view. The lobby features a piano bar. The service was excellent, as one would expect from the price range, even though I found one of the restaurant staff to be just a bit snippy. Seems he didn’t like where I was placing my shrimp shells. Even without a car, this is a fine place to use as a base to explore Hobart---easy walking to downtown or the Salamanca Place Market. No hotels in Hobart are convenient to the airport, and one-way from the Grand Chancellor is about $32AUD, so be forewarned. If you plan to rent a car, get it at the airport. The hotel restaurant has excellent fare and the weekend seafood buffet is recommended. Yanks may be surprised to find the prawns are served with the heads still on, but that’s just the way they do it down under.
