If you find Calistoga's mud bats to be too tourists and motel-ish, drive just a little further north to Harbin Hot Springs. To me, the best thing about Harbin was the skilled bodyworkers. For the massage and the hot springs, the extra drive is worth it. But, be prepared (and open-minded), Harbin is a Big Sur-type of place -- a throwback to the 60s/70s -- very large communal hot springs, nude bathing, reasonably priced accommodations, and a slow, meditative pace. Harbin is close in distance, but far in attitude and altitude from Calistoga (30-45 minute drive). There are healthy restaurants on the grounds. Reserve your massage in advance. Check out their website for more info (www.harbin.org).
