Great Accommodation with Unbeatable Views

Great Accommodation with Unbeatable Views

Fifty five k's from Lake Pukaki and you come to Mount Cook village. And in the midst of it - with absolutely amazing views is the Hermitage Hotel.

Certainly not a backpackers hotel - even if you are travelling the area on a budget, this might be a perfect opportunity to splash out a bit on a little bit of luxurious accommodation.

Situated on the hillside looking directly across at Mt Cook and with great views of the Hooker Valley, this is an ideal set off point for walking, sight seeing, taking photos, seeing the Tasman Glacier which is just a few minutes drive away.

This is not the cheapest place you might stay - the rooms start at around $150 per night. Which, even though it's not budget, is actually still a very good deal for any hotel in New Zealand. Given the location, size, quality and things it has to offer, I would say that it's actually excellent value for money. (An average motel in Blenheim costs about £110 per night.)

And if you're not in your own car on this trip - most of the tour buses run directly to the Hermitage, making it very easy to get to no matter how you are travelling.

It's very remote - so despite it's size you really get the feel for New Zealand here.

There is a huge gift shop down stairs with much of the same items you find elsewhere, but at a decent price and with a very good selection.

There's a bar and restaurant, which had astounding views of the Southern Alps both inside and outside the hotel. On a nice day you can sit outside and have your meal with a perfect view of Mount Cook.

And if you are on a budget, or simply not looking to stay the night in Mt Cook Village - then The Hermitage is an excellent place to stop for lunch or even just a coffee between hikes.
The restaurant is not cheap, either - though it does offer a few good options. Especially at lunch.

If you are on a very tight budget but would still like to experience a bit of what the Hermitage has to offer, stop in on your way around the National Park and have a bowl of their wonderful soup and a coffee outside and soak up the views.

This is a hotel that is well worth the time, effort and money to stay at. It is a Mount Cook experience all on it's own.

When we arrived in Mount Cook, we were surprised to find our hotel, the Mount Cook Travelodge, closed for the season! We found a sign on the door, directing us to go to the Hermitage Hotel and saying we would be upgraded for no additional charge. What good fortune! The Hermitage is a luxurious hotel with warm, inviting rooms. A real treat!
