Pacific Shores Nature Resort

Best Things Nearby:
Pacific Rim National Park Beaches at Qualicum & Rathrevor Park Caves at Sproat Lakes

Best Things About the Resort:
Walking way out into the Bay in the morning hours while the tide is out - searching for shells. Proximity to so many of the attractions in the central and western areas of the island.

Resort Experience:
My daughter and I had a great time relaxing on the huge deck by the hot tub on the point. The deck overlooks the inside strait and English River, has cooking facilities and lounging not far from the unit. The most beautiful sunrises and sunsets with the changes in the tide are quite fascinating for some of us prairie folks. Canoes available for those who dare, and lots of time to find sea shells and sand dollars.

Best Things Nearby:
Whale watching on the West Coast in Tofino.

Buchart Gardens located down south in Victoria.

Crystal Butterfly Gardens located in Victoria.

Nature hiking on the resort property.

Best Things About the Resort:
The accomodations. The resort staff. The location on the island. The views. And, most of all, the currency exchange rate when traveling in from the U.S.!!!

Resort Experience:
It's the type of resort where one can truly de-stress and leave all the pressures of work and what-have-you behind. Where else can you sit out your back door and have a bald eagle land in the tree literally a few feet away from you? I would recommend that you visit at least once and experience it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!!

The accomodations were awesome! We had a two bedroom lockout with all of the ammenities you could possibly imagine: a full kitchen, heated tile floors in the master bath, and a fireplace in the master bedroom. Just about all of the units have a view overlooking the bay and tons of nature trails right out your back door. There are a lot of activities in the area and the resort staff is extremely knowledgeable about the area. You'll almost need two weeks to explore the island and take in all of its sights.

Best Things Nearby:
The city of Victoria is only 45 minutes away - and the drive is beautiful! The famous country store with "goats on the roof" is another fun place to take children - they have ice cream that is to die for! And of course, there are many parks, waterfalls, nature hikes to explore!

Best Things About the Resort:
The furnishings were in very good condition as were all the appliances. The location was incredible - directly on the bay! Some units faced into the bay, the others faced into an estuary - either way the view was wonderful! The timeshare had boats (kayaks, canoes, rafts, etc) that could be used for free. They also provided many informative nature walks: flower walk, fish hatchery, nature hike, etc.

Resort Experience:
If you want a relaxing vacation and an opportunity to see nature at its finest, this is the place for you. You can be as involved with other people as you like, or enjoy as much solitude as you desire.

Stone Hearth Inn

Stone Hearth Inn

The Stone Hearth B&B was built in the 1920's as a country inn. It sits on the open shoreline of Lake Superior 65 miles north of Duluth, amid other homes. Yet it still maintains its country feel with the trees in the spacious yard and the sound of the crashing waves just feet away from the front porch.

There are four traditional guestrooms upstairs, and four more modernized units with whirlpool tubs and gas fireplaces outside in the boathouse. Inside the home the rooms are fairly small, including the guestrooms and downstairs common room.

Our room had a lone rocking chair and a four-poster bed. There was a graduation party hosted by the owners going on downstairs, so we spent the evening in our little room, giggling and reading the guest book for entertainment while we sat on the bed. It was far too cold to sit outside even though it was May 31st!

We did have a view of Lake Superior from our room, and enjoyed listening to the waves at night through the open window. Slept soundly.

In the morning, breakfast was served in the sunny dining room overlooking the lake. Although the brochure promised regional fare including turkey sausage and wild rice pancakes with blueberry syrup, we were served pork sausage and a fluffy sweet bread. Bummer. Especially when your spouse doesn't eat pork or fruit! The hostess was friendly and joined us for coffee, visiting for an hour.

All in all, it was a nice place. Just seemed a little outdated (paint peeling in the guestrooms) and cramped. There was nothing to do once we arrived. We were pretty much restricted to a stark room without a television or radio–not that we wanted either one, but it just seemed weird to feel so confined. And there was no place to go. There are no restaurants in the vicinity. Area shops such as Antilla's Gallery of Norwegian handicrafts and expensive sweaters close by 5pm. The closest movie theater is in Duluth 65 miles away.

But most people want a quiet retreat from the city when they escape to the North Shore. And quiet is what you will get here. Lots of it. Guess we were just ready to get back to the busy world of our one year old daughter after two weeks without her in the northwoods...

Check out their website at www.stonehearthinn.com. To get here take Highway 61 north of Duluth to Little Marais. Look for Lakeside Estates Road on the right hand side of the highway.
