I booked this hotel online from Canada. It was billed as 4 star and the price (105€ per
night for a triple room) was quite reasonable compared to others listed on the web. The description sounded good and the picture made it look like a modern hotel.Reality was a case of good news/bad news. The hotel was located near the train station, a 5 minute walk or 5€ cab ride, but quite a distance from Old Town with its attractions and shops. Luckily bus #16 stopped right outside the hotel door and it was only a 10 minute ride to the city center.
The Lasserhof was old but clean although our room was in need of some T.L.C. The large, high ceiling room had a crystal chandelier with a couple of burnt out bulbs and even with reading lights above the bed it still managed to be a bit dreary -- granted the overcast sky outside didn’t help much. Drapes didn’t quite meet the window ledge which meant the early morning light snuck in before we really wanted to get up, the carpet was clean but marked with old stains and the biggest nuisance was a noisy toilet tank that took forever to refill. Luckily, the shower and sink were in a separate room. We had a small balcony that was large enough for a couple of people to stand on but not large enough for furniture. It didn’t matter since the view was limited to high rise buildings and the train yard in the distance.
Fortunately, the major things -- comfortable beds with cozy duvets and a modern new shower helped us to overlook the other annoyances. The front desk staff was extremely personable and friendly. We didn’t need the hotel’s valet parking but we did make use of their tour desk to book an afternoon bus trip. The satellite TV and very reasonably priced mini bar were welcome at the end of a long day of sightseeing.
The elevator was only big enough for two people and was as slow as molasses. I’d usually take the stairs and beat Bea and Tracey to the room nine times out of ten but I figured the exercise was a benefit. I definitely needed it after partaking of the buffet breakfast, which was included in the price of the room. It was a typical hearty Austrian breakfast with sliced meats and cheeses, cold cereals, breads, juices, fruits and yogurt.
Overall, the Lasserhof is an acceptable budget hotel but if you’re looking for high quality or a central location I’d suggest you go elsewhere. Note that to access the elevator you need to descend about seven steps so anyone with mobility problems might have some difficulty.
