Finally a quiet place to stay in Rocky Point

  • September 26, 2007

By far the nicest place to stay in Puerto Penasco. Great sandy beach, no peddlers. Awesome pool and a nice golf course. It's about 20 minutes outside of town so be prepared to drive if you don't want to pay the $26 u.s. for the dinner buffet. Great kid's center helps the adults with some down time. The suite comes with a fully equipped kitchen, so you could cook if you like, though that kind of defeats the point of a vacation.

FAMILY VACATION

This hotel should be an all inclusive to help people staying there with children and maybe even lower their buffet prices.

Beautiful Resort

Very enjoyable, but isolated. No night life. One BR suite is large with one bathroom & two sofa beds in living room that have trundles. Liquor on premises is expensive so if driving take your own, & other supplies also. Food is good & not overly expensive for as nice as the resort is. Very family friendly. Good service. No entertainment or sports. Beach is great, really warm. No peddlars or timeshare pressure like everywhere else in Mexico. No public phones to use Mex. phone cards, no cell service, & calls from rooms are expensive. Still under construction.

Best place to stay in Rocky Point

This resort is located about 10-15 miles from town making it very secure and exclusive yet close enough for dinning and shopping. The beach was amazing in comparison to the beaches in town! No glass or trash; very well kept. The staff was very helpful and spoke english. The pool was exquisite and crystal clear. This is, by far, the nicest and safest place to stay in Rocky Point! Overall you must see this place to believe it.

Mayan Palace Puerto Penasco

Best Things Nearby:
The beach and pool area were the best things right at the resort. We didn't go anywhere else, preferring to stay at the resort for our first foray into Mexico.

Best Things About the Resort:
The restaurant at the Mayan Palace had very good buffets, as well as choices off their menu. We overheard another group that said that the food here was superior to other Mayan Palaces they had been to.

Resort Experience:
The Border Crossing: I had been a bit nervous about driving my own car across the border, but after checking into it, I decided to go ahead, so I bought the Mexican car insurance online (a must to keep from being put in a Mexican jail if you are involved in an accident) and made sure I had all ownership papers in hand, and we headed across to Sonoyta. There was no line at all, and since we had nothing to declare, we didn't even have to stop! And even on the way back, our passports and papers were not checked, and again, there was no line. But be sure you have everything with you anyway.

The Arrival: Our arrival was pleasant, with no real language barrier, although I did have to ask them to repeat one or two things. A line of credit is set up so that everything can be charged to the room, and you don't need to have Mexican pesos. The only complaint is that they put a wristband on you that stays on all week during your stay--a real annoyance, especially the first day. We were also immediately signed up for a tour of the property in exchange for 15% off all food, drink, and spa. Since we were going to be eating in the restaurant quite a bit, we decided to sign up--that may have been a mistake.

Oh, The Pressure: We had been told that the tour would only be 90 minutes, including the free breakfast in the restaurant, which we were told would be first. When we showed up, first we were seated, and our timeshare and travel history was taken down. Then we were "approved" to receive the rest of the tour, like it was a big favor to us! Breakfast was nice, but afterward it seemed clear that it was being used to build a rapport with our sales person so that we might trust him more. Then came the real tour, and oh, the pressure of the sales pitch. Never have we seen anything like it, even at a used car lot. There were managers and closers, and the price and offer kept changing. And of course, it was all only good for that day. We were there for four and a half hours, including the breakfast! We were finally able to escape without buying anything, including a very expensive vacation club package.

The Resort: The resort was pretty good, but clearly the bulk of it was under construction, with the planned completion being six years from now. We had trouble with low water pressure and at times no water at all in our top-floor (fifth-floor) condo. We did have a partial ocean view even though we were on the back side, but mostly our view was just construction. We may even come back after a long while and only after all construction is complete.
