Resort Experience:
We love this resort because it is out in the country and full of fun things to do for families. The resort always have great activities planned to keep you busy all day and evening. It is great for winter (skiing, snowboarding and tubing) and for summer (tennis, golf, swimming and hiking).

The units are spacious, extremely clean, and well kept. There's a kitchen, laundry area, large bathrooms, and king-size bed in the master bedroom. A nice fireplace keeps you warm and cozy in the winter.

Best Things About the Resort:

Resort Experience:
Weekends are usually more crowded as locals ski then, so skiing during the week may be a better choice. They are good enough to keep all the walkways and stairs clear of snow, so you're not walking in tons of snow when trying to get around.

It seemed odd to read that you needed a car to get from the Carriage Hills to the resort/ski area. However, once you arrive, you will see that Carriage Hills is situated in a residential area. You check in at the main resort then drive through the residential homes to get to the Carriage Hills. It can make you feel a little disconnected from the main resort since you have to drive to get around. Carriage Hills has its own amenity section, which includes an indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub, game room, weight room, movie rentals, and games. The VIP team will schedule activities for you, such as a meet and greet breakfast and evening get-togethers. This is a nice opportunity to meet others staying at the resort. If you like casinos, they do a weekly casino trip and you get a free dinner buffet if you sign up for Casino Rama’s players club.

Activities:
Skiing, snowboarding, après ski, snow shoeing, dog sledding, sleigh rides, snow tubing, ice skating, movie nights, arts and crafts, golf in the summer, etc. They also have a kids’ program called Kiddie Corral, which is a nice option for families.

Accommodations:
We stayed in a studio, which was fairly large; my only request for the resort would be to add more hooks/space for hanging up wet clothing. The studio has a mini fridge, sink, microwave and all the utensils and silverware is provided. There was a couch, small dining table, king bed, and a bathroom with a shower (no tub). The rooms also have a nice balcony with and a shared washer/dryer between the units. The only downside is that the units are shared, so you have a neighbor next door, above, and below you, which is a drag if your neighbors are noisy or walk heavily!

Skiing:
We are normally green/blue trail skiers, but were able to master all trails, including black. For those who normally ski black diamond, you may feel a little unchallenged at this resort. The runs are short but fun; it is definitely a good starter ski trip for newer skiers. The only bummer is you seem to spend more time riding the lifts than skiing down hills.

Overall, we had a great time. Carriage Hills has some great bargain rates -- we booked a week in the studio unit for $99. They even had one-bedroom units on sale for $99, but those did not fit our dates. So in terms of bang for the buck, Carriage Hills is excellent. We would happily return for the same great rate again! This is a good vacation for families and first-time skiers.

Carriage Hills Resort at Horsehoe Valley

The units are quite large and decorated with beautiful pine furniture. We found the resort to be very quiet, which was great. Each room had a small deck so you could sit outside.

The pool had many chairs, so it was easy to hang out at the pool as well. The resort has outdoor barbecues around many of the units. The pool is about 100 steps away from most units, so bring a robe and some "wet" shoes to go back and forth.

There are lots of hiking areas around, as well as ski areas. If you go in the summer there is a nice beach also, which is about an hour away. The unit has all the amenities--laundry, full kitchen, dishwasher, VCR, two TVs, stereo, dining area, large closets, and Jacuzzi. There are many daily activities, but we were too busy reading on the pool deck or our condo deck to participate. Those who did, though, had a great time. Friendly staff, quick check-in, great room service. . . really, you won't want to leave.

Best Things Nearby:
The best things nearby are the golf and skiing. This is definitely an all season resort with golf and ski facilities on-site with other courses and ski hills nearby.

Best Things About the Resort:
The first time we stayed at Carriage Hills, we fell in love with it. The best thing about this resort has to be the accommodations themselves. There can not be many other resorts out there that come close to the quality of the accommodations that are found here.

Resort Experience:
As its name suggests, Carriage Hills Resort is located on the grounds of Horseshoe Resort, just north of Barrie, Ontario. Horseshoe Resort is located within the valley of a range of surrounding hills while Carriage Hills is perched on the top of these hills. Both resorts share all of the facilities located in the valley. Carriage Hills also has its own recreational centre, which offers services to Carriage Hills owners and guests only. The recreational centre, The Carriage House, is the yellow building pictured in the RCI resort directory. It offers an indoor/outdoor pool, sauna, gym, games room, and outdoor hot tub.

Carriage Hills has three room configurations within each unit, a one bedroom, studio, or two bedroom. Carriage Hills uses a room "lock-out" feature that allows all units to be either a studio, one, or two-bedroom dependent upon the type of room reserved. When you open the door to your unit and step into the entrance, you will notice three doors, one door leads to the washer and dryer. This is shared between the two rooms in the unit. If you have booked a two bedroom, you will be able to unlock the remaining two doors. One leads to a one bedroom, the other to a studio unit.

The one bedroom units are fantastic. They offer a large fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room with fireplace, a bedroom, bathroom and a large Jacuzzi tub between the master bedroom and bathroom. The living room also has a pull-out coach, if needed. The one bedroom also has two televisions, VCR, and a stereo.

While not as grand as the one bedroom, the studios are still very nice. They are basically one large room with a basic kitchenette, and a sitting area with a pull out coach. The studio also has a television and VCR.

If you have booked a two bedroom, you get use of both the one bedroom and the studio and, can sleep a total of eight people, six privately.
