Description: KOA campgrounds, believe it or not (and I had trouble believing it . . . ), make great budget alternatives for families (or, in my case, a young couple) looking for a way to stay in an appealing locale without bankrupting the meagre vacation budget. I wanted romantic Charleston and, believe it or not, this KOA, about a 10-minute drive from the Battery, helped make that possible on a tight budget without skimping too much on privacy or location.
Mt. Pleasant is a very well-run 'luxury' KOA campground. Part of the nationwide chain offering ample space for pull-thru and tent campers, this facility also boasts a wide variety of cabins from one-room cabins to KOA Kamping Kottages with private bathroom, TV, and kitchenette. The cabins were perfect for my S.O. and me. Plenty of room to stretch out and all we had to bring were linens and pillows. Bathrooms are shared but the staff here keeps them very clean. These cabins also possess heaters and ACs depending on when you're visiting. Another nice touch.
For more than one-night stays where ambience doesn't count for much, I've really fallen for these cabins. They are private, quiet, roomy, and you don't have to worry about whether a low price will mean low-quality sheets, towels, cleanliness, etc. And, in the case of Mt. Pleasant, they have a great view of the campground's stately palms towering over a private pond that just beams in the Charleston moonlight.
This KOA is close to everything yet still peaceful--on the site of an old plantation. It is green and lush year-round. If you are with a family, they've got a swimming pool and gaming room to keep the kids busy when you're not exploring the city.
