Best Things Nearby:
Easy to catch the Ferry to St. John from Red Hook Harbour. Many great places to dine, but you will need a car or taxi. Many hills, and they are not within walking distance.

Best Things About the Resort:
The scenery and the beauty of the property. If you like water sports, this is the place!

Resort Experience:
Was disappointed with the staff, but not with the beauty of the property. Not all the staff was bad, it was mostly the servers. To get to the pool can be an inconvenience, as you have to take stairs. They have a shuttle for your convenience that runs every 5 to 10 minutes. It will take you to and pick you up from the beach, pool, and parking areas.

Wyndham Sugar Bay is a beautiful property, situated near Sapphire Bay. Some rooms look out toward the ocean and St. John. We stayed in the back tower, which had an elevator and stairs. We were there 7 days. We checked in with no problem and were helped with our bags to our room. The room was nice, with a view of Sapphire Bay. There are 99 steps to the beach and pool area. If you can't do steps, there is a shuttle that runs every 5-10 minutes that will drop you off and pick you up. If you rent a car, you will have to drop off your luggage at the hotel entrance and then drive your car back down the hill and park in their secured parking lot. The shuttle that picks you up from the beach/pool area will stop at the parking lot to pick up guests and take you back up to the hotel. This shuttle runs 24/7.

The entrance to the resort is quite charming, and the veranda is wonderful to order a drink and watch the sunset as the lights of St. John turn on at dusk. The property is very nice and the rooms were comfortable, clean, a little musty from the humidity, but that didn't bother us. Check out my detailed report as to why we would not go back!

Best Things Nearby:
Honestly, the roads are kind of like a roller coaster, and even though the island is small, nothing really feels "close by."

Best Things About the Resort:
Lots of water sport equipment is available, such as non-motorized stuff like kayaks and snorkel gear.

Resort Experience:
This resort is actually an "all-inclusive" resort, and I didn't know that this would be a big deal when I booked the trip. They asked if I'd like to upgrade to all-inclusive status, and I said no, thinking we'd do a lot more exploring of the island and that we wouldn't spend all day, every day at the resort. However, the resort is mainly geared towards guests who are all-inclusive, and we didn't think the upgrade would have been worth our money since we don't consume a lot of alcohol. The upgrade would have been $75 a day per person. They give you a wrist band if you are all-inclusive. When we ate at their restaurant, it took forever to get our check because the staff isn't used to writing out checks. Our bill had to taken to the front desk to be rung up. It was very clear that we would have had a better time at this resort had we been staying all-inclusive.

The beach looks a lot nicer in the photos you see on the website. It's fairly small, with a lot of rocks at the end of the beach. The pool was okay, but the waterfalls made it kind of loud. The hot tub was most enjoyable.

It's also hard to find something to eat at this resort past 11pm or so.

I was fairly disappointed with the friendliness of the resort staff. No one seemed pleasant or eager to be helpful. We kind of walked away feeling "ignored."

The resort is not on flat ground, which means a lot of walking or waiting for shuttles. This is especially important to consider if you are, or are traveling with, a disabled person. The parking lot is very far from the front desk, and you need to be shuttled from your car if you rent one, as we did.

Also, there is a long wooden staircase going down to the pool and beach area. This was such a hassle to trek down every time for a swim and then be tired from swimming and have to trek back up.

The room was fair. It had a mini-fridge that looked like it needed to be cleaned. The bathroom looked kind of worn down, considering the website says the resort recently underwent a renovation. We had a good view from our room, overlooking a cove.

The two beds in our room felt very small for queen-sized beds. I'm convinced they were only full-sized beds, and we pondered for days whether we should ask to switch rooms.

I wouldn't suggest this place unless you are going to consume a lot of alcohol on the "all-inclusive plan" and don't plan on leaving the resort at all to explore.

There was a tennis court and gym we never checked out. If you are looking for a resort with a great beach and ease of getting around, this is not the place for you.

We stayed in a deluxe room, which had a balcony and an ocean view. We also chose to go all-inclusive. The rooms are large, and the bathrooms are spacious. There is a mini refrigerator, small table, chair, and a safe in each room. The swimming pool is nice, and there is a waterfall that lands in the pool, which you can swim under. When you go to the pool, make sure you take everything you want on the first trip. There are about 100 stairs to climb from the pool area up to the hotel level. Of course, this may be all the exercise you get while on vacation! There are tennis courts and a pro available. The concierge desk was helpful in recommending and setting up day excursions. There is also a resort-level scuba course that is included in your stay. There are two restaurants to choose from; one is more formal, and the other is casual and by the pool. The food was good and at times great. We did not have a bad meal. All this aside, the view from our balcony looked over to St. John and was breathtaking!

The only downside to this hotel was the beach access. The beach at the hotel is small and a bit rocky. If you are planning to enjoy the beach at the hotel, I recommend taking water shoes. The hotel does provide free snorkeling gear. As you swim into the water there are some large boulders under the water to your right. We swam among these and saw some great fish. We also got in a two-person kayak and paddled around for awhile. If you look closely, you will occasionally see giant turtles.

This resort was called Sugar Bay Plantation when we visited and was extremely nice. I'm afraid to mention part of my perception might be due to the fact that our snoring companion had moved on and we were able to catch up on our sleep. As this was part of our travel package and is also a timeshare, the cost per night may be inaccurate. But Sugar Bay is beautifully kept and has an outstanding breakfast buffet which was included and does tend to start the days off very well indeed.

We had two double beds and a lovely balcony. The staff might not have been so personable, nor the activities so varied (maybe because we were to tired to care?), but we were indeed in heaven. This place sits on a hill and at the base is the bar/light snack Turtle Rock cafe where steel pan music played nightly and we could hear it softly from our balcony with the surf in the background. This was certainly the good life!
