Frenchman's Reef

Frenchman's Reef is a nice hotel in an excellent location. It is 20 minutes to airport with light traffic and 10 minutes to town. There is a beautiful view of the harbor and town. Morningstar beach was peaceful, not overcrowded, with all of the amenities needed. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The hotel and surroundings were quite clean and well maintained. There was plenty of variety in restaurants, including the truly gourmet waterside Havana Blue. It is removed from the chaos of the cruise ships, but as the ships arrive and depart, it almost feels as if you could reach out and touch these huge ocean-going ships. The view from many of the Marriott decks or from Morningstar beach was amazing. I would return.

Our hotel was very nice and had everything you would want in a resort. We arrived during the afternoon and had a shuttle from the airport to the hotel. The lobby was really nice and tropical looking, with fresh air going though. The front desk was helpful and quickly checked us in and told us where everything was. We checked out our room, which was just a normal hotel room. We had a particle view. We had two beds, a refrigerator, a closet, table and chairs, a nice bathroom, and a balcony. The room was clean and neat.

Next, we decided to look around the property. It was a large area, and after being on a plane or in an airport, we tired quickly. The building we were staying in was a short walk to the beach, but they do offer rooms right on the beach. There was a really nice pool with a waterfall right out from our building. The area with the gazebo and weddings was also located right there. This area was all on a hill that overlooked the ocean. Then there was a pathway that leads to the beach and other buildings. There were tennis courts on this pathway between the buildings, and then another outdoor pool right next to the beach. There were the beach rooms and a bar and restaurant that was right on the beach. This was a very casual place where you could have mostly fast foods and drinks. The food was fine and so was the service. A little further was another restaurant in another building that offered fine dining. There was also a restaurant in the building we were staying in. We ate at this restaurant one night and also enjoyed the food and service. A fourth restaurant was located outside between the pool and wedding area. This is where we had the wedding reception, and once again, the food and service were both good.

The hotel was located a ways from the airport and also a ways from other places. They did offer a boat ferry from our hotel to the downtown market area. This was only about $5 per person and a neat quick way to get to town. We were only a short distance from where the cruise ships dock, and there were many shops and things in the docking area there. It was more than walking distance from the hotel, though.

My best friend was married at this hotel, and the hotel took care of arranging everything. They also had a spa and hair salon, and everyone in the wedding was able to get their hair and nails done on the morning of the wedding. This was all prearranged. The wedding had cake, flowers, pictures, and a reception included in it. The wedding went smooth and the pictures came back great.

I would recommend this hotel for either a wedding or just a vacation.

Frenchman's Reef Marriott

Only ten minutes from Charlotte Amalie, the Marriott's Frenchman's Reef hotel is set upon a hill on the Southern tip of the island overlooking the harbour on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. Steps lead from the hotel and guest rooms to the beach and the Marriott's Morningstar Beach Resort. The Morningstar Resort consists of several small buildings of guest rooms right on the beach. Guests have access to all facilities at both resorts including 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 shops, tennis courts, spa, gym and a private beach. There are 2 connected pools at Frenchman's Reef with a swim up bar and waterfall. There's another pool by the beach at the Morningstar resort. The waves can be rough on the beach so stick to the pool if you're not a good swimmer.

We used Marriott Rewards points for 2 weeks (130,000 pts/week) and paid $145/night for the 3rd week. As a bonus, our "garden view" room in the "seacliff building" had a great water view too. The room was really big for a Marriott room with a huge King sized bed. It had all the standard amenities - cable TV, telephone, bathroom with shower/bath, a/c, desk, in-room safe and comfy chair. In addition every room has a private patio (or balcony), fridge and separate ice maker (very handy).

The grounds of the hotel are beautifully bathed in lush greens, hibiscus and Flamboyant trees with vibrantly colored flowers. There are many iguanas sunning themselves along the path to the beach. Don't be afraid of them. They are friendly and let you get pretty close to them. The hotel's gardener gives a talk on the iguanas for nature-loving guests every Tuesday.

A water taxi leaves every hour from the Marriott's dock to downtown Charlotte Amalie. The fare ($5 each one way) and journey time are probably equivalent to that of a normal taxi cab but it's a nicer, more scenic and relaxing journey. Only drawback - the steps from the dock to the hotel are long and steep.

If you are looking for a meal in town, the concierge desk has a book of menus from all types of restaurants. Also, don't be afraid to ask the concierge or bell hops for their favorites.

The tour desk is located on the same level as the pool. Here you can book all kinds of tours and excursions in St Thomas and the neighboring Virgin Islands. Snorkelling, sunset cruises, helicopter tours and submarine tours are also available. They can also help you book a powerboat for the day. I highly recommend this (see separate Powerboat Activity section).

The friendly and helpful staff at the Marriott added to the Caribbean feel and atmosphere. We also enjoyed having the local newspaper delivered daily. We really loved this hotel for its location, comfort and services. It's much more than the standard Marriott hotel. Just be prepared for a lot of stairs.

Spacious rooms with views of Morning Star Beach accessible by elevator. The propery is covered with hybiscus, bouganvillas and almond trees. White sand and sun. The iguanas roam free at the pool area, avoid red polish lest you want them nibbling at your toes! Great amenties and food is ok. A little off the beaten track, it''s not like you can just walk to any shopping.
