The resort is right on the water. Although there isn't much of a beach, there is a beautiful pool and elaborate oceanside deck. You can snorkel right off the side - there is an amazing coral reef right there, considered one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Within 50 feet of the shore, I saw barracuda, sea turtles, and tons of tropical fish. You can rent snorkel equipment for very low prices at the on-property convenience store. We also found the store useful for booking tours, buying light groceries and libations, renting a jeep, and just getting general island information from the extremely friendly staff.
The best part of Gallows Point is that it is neither a hotel nor a rental, but rather the best of both worlds. The prices are definitely cheaper than the two luxury resorts on the island (Caneel Bay and the Westin). You have the ability to save money by cooking in your own fully equipped kitchen (and then eating on the gorgeous balcony). Yet there is also a very friendly and professional staff of guides, housekeepers, and others making sure that all of your needs are met and that your bungalow stays nice and clean for the duration of the trip. When we were looking for accommodations for the trip, I wasn't comfortable being completely on our own, without any guidance, etc., as we had never been to St. John before. Yet we couldn't afford the big hotels. Gallows Point was a perfect compromise. They also don't allow children (under the age of 12, I think), so our time there was very peaceful and romantic. Plus, the resort is located just a five-minute walk from Cruz Bay (St John's central village), where there were tons of choices of restaurants, bars, etc., when we wanted a little more excitement. The ferry harbor is right there as well, and several of the major St John beaches are within a very short walking distance.
All in all, our stay at Gallows Point couldn't have been any better. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone venturing to St. John. And by the way, St John itself is the most fabulous place I have ever been, but that is another report for another time!

Our one-bedroom condo had a full kitchen, a large living room with pull out couch, a deck off the living room with a view of Cruz Bay, a large bedroom and separate bath. There were three of us who stayed here, and we certainly could have been comfortable for the entire week here.
