Royal Suites at Atlantic Palace

Upon arrival there was a bellman available to handle luggage. We were then directed to the second floor for check-in. We were given a choice of floors -- low or high. However, we were never asked if we preferred smoking or non-smoking and I didn't think to ask. The room had a very offensive smoking odor.

Another mistake I made was waiting until the morning to request more towels. In the room was ONE facecloth, ONE hand towel, and two bath towels. There was NO bath mat, but I assumed that they didn't have them. When I called for towels, I was told that I was limited to ONE set per person, which meant ONE bath, ONE face and ONE hand towel. I called a second time for towels because after 30 minutes, I still did not have towels. The same thing happened the next day and we had over a 30-minute wait for towels to be delivered.

There was maid service on Monday and at that time, they did leave two sets of towels, a bath mat, soap, shampoo, and a kitchen towel, all of which were MISSING when we checked into the room!

However, a clean set of sheets for the sofabed were not left and I called when arriving back at the room that night when I realized the sheets were missing. After 20 minutes, I had to call a second time. At that time, I was told that the housekeeping person was not answering his radio and it was probably dead. They suggested that I go down to the desk and get the sheets. I made it perfectly clear that I was in my nightclothes and I was not about to get dressed to go down there. About 10 minutes after that second call, the sheets finally arrived.

Also, there were rotten strawberries left in the refrigerator when we arrived.

One morning, there was a plumbing problem. When I called the front desk to report a plumbing problem, the person who answered said, "Oh, the toilet?" From her question and tone, it seemed to me that it was a recurring problem. The bathroom sink was slow draining. The shower was absolutely horrendous because water splashed everywhere. The water wasn't always very hot and to get in and out of the tub, one needed a stepladder because it was so high.

One last comment: Atlantic Palace is located right on the boardwalk so that you can enter from the boardwalk rather than going down some alley next to the building walking past some low life bar. Of course, it is great IF the key works. I went to the desk and told them that my key did not work from the boardwalk entrance and they told me that some do and some don't. They made me another set of keys, which didn't work either.

All in all, it was a very mediocre place to stay!

Best Things Nearby:
The casinos, of course, and the ocean.

Best Things About the Resort:
The views. We had a view of the ocean and the boardwalk; at night, this is beautiful.

Resort Experience:
The resort is in need of some repair. The housekeeping staff also needs some training, as we couldn't get any washcloths. This place is nice, but not spectacular. If you like the ocean and the casinos, this is a nice place to stay.

This was a relatively nice place. Our room was a deluxe and it was just right for the four people we had in the room. The only drawback was that the window in the bathroom that looked out into the living room, so there was not much privacy here. Also, I suggest you bring your own washcloths, as we had none and couldn't get any either. Our room looked out onto the ocean and we were on the 26th floor, which was great because we had a terrific view. All in all, we enjoyed our stay here.

Best Things Nearby:
The boardwalk, the beach, and, of course, the casinos. You can walk to most of them.

Best Things About the Resort:
The view of the beach, the large windows, and the jacuzzi tub.

Resort Experience:
The studio was clean and the staff was friendly. We asked for several missing items and received them quickly. However, the strong smell of cigarettes is almost everywhere and it even creeps into your room. The studios are best for a couple and it would be crowded for four people, unless they are small children, although I'm not sure I would take my kids to Atlantic City. Too much smoking and drinking goes on in the casinos, so unless you are going to the beach with the kids in the warm weather, I would get a sitter and come by yourselves. We were told we would have a big screen TV in the room, but there was not one. I’m not sure if some rooms do really have a big screen TV. The jacuzzi tub was a bit small, too. This resort must be considered Gold Crown because of the location, but the amenities were the same as in most standard resorts.

Best Things Nearby:
There are wonderful nature reserves and the quaint boardwalk community of Ocean City close by for those who prefer things other than gambling.

Best Things About the Resort:
The view out our window, overlooking the Boardwalk, the ocean and the skyline was wonderful.

Resort Experience:
The timeshare room was well maintained and very efficiently laid out. It was well-equipped, but small - even for a studio - but it was comfortable and clean. The bathroom - a sticky point in many of our accommodations - was clean and well maintained. It had a great big, deep whirlpool bath.

We expect things to be a little tight in a studio and they were. But there is something to be said about being able to get up out of bed and be standing right in front of the coffeemaker, sink, stove, etc. You didn't have to go far to get a midnight snack.

The "resort" really had nothing else to offer - no pool, no activities - not what I have come to expect from a RCI resort. The casinos are obviously the center of the experience, and maybe that is what was in the thinking of the management - but we enjoyed the shopping and the dining the most.

The biggest negative is the area just outside the Boardwalk. This is an area of poverty - which really is rather striking in contrast with the opulence of the hotels and casinos right next door. And, of course, there are the beggars along the Boardwalk trying to cash in on the benevolence of the "happy rich people."
