Luxury Resort Is More Like Public Housing

  • November 16, 2009

Specifically, related to Interval International and its Flagship resort property, our one and only experience with using the timeshare we contracted for was nothing short of disastrous. We found the quality of your property and our accommodations to be poor and your customer service to equally as egregious. Upon arriving at the Flagship resort for my 50th birthday vacation we were assigned to Room 2406, which was an absolute nightmare from the time we got off the elevator. Garbage bags were piled up next to the elevator and the stench emanating from them was sickening. The hallway leading to the room was poorly lit and just as poorly maintained. The room contained no appointments such as wall art, the carpet and furnishings were worn and dirty, there were broken and missing tiles on the balcony which was covered in bird feces on both the balcony floor and furniture to the degree that it had to be scraped off the balcony floor with a metal tool and the balcony railing was loose. Upon complaining, we were moved to room 905. As it turned out there was no hot water in the shower. Complaints led to an unsuccessful day long effort to resolve the issue; as a result, we were moved to yet another room.
All of the rooms to which we were assigned overlooked what was referred to as a common balcony. The appearance of this common balcony was such that it left the impression that it is never subject to maintenance. We were able to observe weeds growing out cracks in the surface; the common balcony was littered with debris such as empty alcohol bottles, broken furniture and discarded clothing and broken/missing tiles throughout. Overall, the Flagship Resort had much more the appearance of a public housing facility then the luxury resort we were led to believe during the sales presentation. We took every opportunity to express our extreme dissatisfaction with your sales team and the resort operations management. Our experience was so devastating that we departed a day earlier than the reservations that were made.

Royal Suites at the Atlantic Palace—now FANTASEA

Royal Suites at Atlantic Palace has a new name!! It's now FANTASEA. We so much enjoyed last summer that we exchanged again into a studio as soon as we saw availability on the RCI website. An early check-in and a tip again got us on the top floor—#31. Last year we were fortunate to have a corner room but this year we have the same size room but without the extra windows.

This resort/timeshare/hotel could use some upgrading of linens and spreads. The leather sofas have held up well to all the traffic, but since there is such an awareness lately of "luxury style" bedding with duvets and choice of pillows on cruise ships and name brand hotels, these older soft goods don't measure up any more. Bathroom counters and toilet are very low compared to the newer "comfort height" seen in newer construction. However, these are negligeable complaints when you can spend a week in summer on the ocean in the best location of any timeshare in Atlantic City for less than $200. We may return again in 2007.

WHAT I LIKED:

The staff continues to be pleasant

Timeshare personnel are inconspicuous and not bothersome

Welcome party with champagne, hors d'oeuvres, bingo, and prizes

Monte Carlo night at Flagshhip Resort (are they sister timeshares??)

Large area for game room and small gym overlooking the large deck and pool

Good security in lobby and parking garage (one car allowed free)

Great views in an exciting city

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGED:

Better Internet access

Umbrellas by the pool

Newer sheets and spreads

More elevators (they are shared with housekeeping and bell staff)

Safe in room

Fantasea would not appeal to the beautiful people who frequent "Borgata"—this is timeshare and families are moving in with coolers, groceries, beach chairs, umbrellas, and kids in tow for a good vacation value with all the action of Atlantic City at their doorstep.

Royal Suites at Atlantic Palace

We stayed at the Atlantic Palace. Each unit has a kitchen (no ovens - -but stove top and microwave), full size refrigerator and dishwasher. We were traveling with a party of eight and had three one bedroom suites reserved ...just as in the Seinfeld car rental episode—apparently they know how to take a reservation but don’t know how to hold a reservation...on our arrival they did not have any one bedroom units—BUT—they did offer us the use of two bedroom units...which was our only choice so of course we took them. The two bedroom had a queen size bed in each bedroom and a couch which folds out...so the unit could sleep 6...the best aspect of this facility is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! On New York Avenue and the Boardwalk you are within walking distance (a maximum of about ¾ mile in either direction) to the majority of all of the places the Boardwalk has to offer. We were disappointed when we were told the only views available were the city views, but again since we had no choice took it—we were pleasantly surprised to have the most wonderful view of the boardwalk, and ocean and the surrounding area. We were in the last unit to the non water side of the building and had a STELLAR view—so anywhere in the building would offer spectacular views!!! There are no scheduled activities for all practical purposes, the facility provides you with a list of the shows and events scheduled in the casinos the week of your stay. You are better off doing the homework and getting any show tickets prior to your arrival...a great place to start that search is http://www.atlanticcitynj.com. The ocean is just in front of you and the beach if fully public and accessible. Lots of shells for children at low tides...there is a small pool, which was VERY cold!!! In June (in New Jersey) there still isn’t enough air temp heat build up to warm the pool...and the ocean is cold too!!!

Resort Experience:
Somewhat apprehensive after reading some negative reviews, we were prepared for some disappointment but decided that we would make the best of the situation. Our arrival went smoothly - the bellhop unloads your car, you self-park with a voucher, and, once checked in, you call for your bags. A smile and a tip went a long way - we were assigned an upgraded corner studio unit on the top floor with an amazing view of the ocean, boardwalk, and city.

At 450 square feet with six floor-to-ceiling windows, the unit feels very spacious, open, and easy to make our home for the next week. The neutral decor of black, taupe, and gray blends well with the light oak furniture. The partial kitchen is more than adequate with a small refrigerator, two-burner stove, small microwave - you can easily have breakfast or lunch – and enough utensils, dishes, and pots and pans for dinner, but who wants to cook?

Although there isn't a dining table, the bar area with high stools and an ocean view or the small coffee table in front of the leather sofa were both perfect for a drink or snack. Storage was adequate, with a closet, an armoire that housed the TV and DVD and had four drawers, and a nightstand that provided more storage space. There were plenty of kitchen cabinets and the luggage fit in compartments under the bed.

I just loved the bathroom. It was long and narrow, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. It sounds strange, but it was the best. The twin sinks with cabinet storage had great lighting, plenty of mirrors - even a magnifier - and a really powerful hair dryer. To top it all, the Jacuzzi tub with shower overlooked the ocean.

The location on the boardwalk is perfect - within walking distance of casinos, restaurants, and the jitney. The elevator can be slow at busy times since only three elevators service 31 floors. Timeshare salespersons are not pesky and security personnel are in the lobby at all times.

Atlantic City has improved over the past 5 years - Not only is the boardwalk active, but there is now outlet shopping, a convention center, and beach clubs on the dunes, and the Tropicana has a "Quarter" with restaurants, music, and shopping, making it a nice diversion for the whole family.

In my opinion, Atlantic City is more a place for adults, but we saw many families who were enjoying their time at the beach and along the boardwalk. This particular resort does not plan any activities for either adults or children, but this should not be considered a negative aspect. If you come to Atlantic City, you more than likely are not looking for a take-care-of-the-kids experience. Most people are here for the beach or casinos. If you need the Disney atmosphere, Florida should be your choice.

We've already made reservations for next summer. It's an exciting city that's getting better all the time, and Atlantic Palace is a good choice if you don't need to be in a casino hotel.

Resort Experience:
My wife and I went for the Columbus day weekend.. The weather was fine - a little cool in the mornings but wonderful sun!! We were surprised about not having a safe in the room (esp in Atlantic City .) Also the continential breakfeast has been stopped - only for the hotel visitors - not timeshare owners.
