Best Things Nearby:
Squaw Valley Village is nice, but not all stores are open off season. Lake Tahoe should not be missed. You can drive around the entire lake in a couple of hours. The casinos, restuarants, and the town of Truckee are worth a visit. There is a horse stable nearby but it is seasonal. If you're a skier, the slopes are very close.

Best Things About the Resort:
The staff and activities. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcome. You can rent bikes for free, go on guided hikes, attend lectures, wine and cheese get together. The pools are kept heated and the grounds are well maintained. We were fortunate to see the fall colors on the trees.

Resort Experience:

The resort is small. I believe all the rooms are one-bedrooms, and I would not recommend putting four people in one room. You enter into the bedroom and walk through the bathroom to enter the living room. The kitchen area is small, and the kitchen table folds down to give you more room. There is not a lot of storage space in the kitchen, but it worked well for us, as we didn't cook. The icebox is small without a freezer, so do not buy any ice cream.

]The history of the resort is interesting. The Inn was used as dormitories for the Winter Olympics during the 1960s. The current bathroom in the units used to be an open hallway and the bedroom and living room were two separate dorms. The bathrooms were down the hall. This explains the reason you enter into the bedroom. I must say, they did a great job of renovating, and I believe the property has been updated many times.

The property is pretty isolated. There is a hiking trail that starts on the property and you can walk to the nearby village. However, for grocery shopping it's best to drive 5 miles to Tahoe city. You'll find everything you need in Tahoe city. The resort offers water aerobics and lap swimming most mornings. There were activities every day and they change by the season.

Best Things Nearby:
Pizza restaurant with a great hot chocolate. There are nice little shops in a ski village. Must do: a candle shop where family can go and make their own candles - lots of fun there.

Best Things About the Resort:
Close to the slopes

Resort Experience:
We were disappointed with the accommodations. The place is old and smells terrible. We were forced after we had already unpacked to move to different room due to smell, but the new room WAS NOT much better. We asked for some air freshener to help cover the smell, and that helped somewhat. The resort has transportation to the ski lifts, which are about five minutes away and can be also walked, optimally when not with gear. Reception staff was not too helpful and told us: "Here: read this before you ask us any questions." Sorry, what if I can't read? I thought that comment was rude and demonstrated that "she" didn't feel like working. Activities were really goofy, like "quilting"--I came to enjoy snow, not to stick my head into my "mother's art." One of the good activities, snowshoeing, was offered only one time and did not have enough space for everybody who wanted to participate. Spas were "out of order." Overall: I would never go back there or ever recommend it to anyone.

The north end Lake Tahoe is about 15 minutes away, South Lake Tahoe City is nearly an hour away by car.

Best Things About the Resort:
Nice, charming rooms (heed the descriptions warning- they are SMALL but lovely), beautiful grounds with ponds and streams, 5 hot tubs, and a big swimming pool.

Resort Experience:
The resort is wonderful! The staff was nice, the grounds beautiful and nice rooms. We visited for a week over Labor Day. Other than hiking, we didn't find much to do though. We didn't find any great restaurants, we liked a local pizza place though, Tahoe Pizza. We actually left a day early because we were bored with the area. We recommend Tahoe for a long weekend rather than an entire week, at least in the fall.

Squaw Valley ski resort, Lake Tahoe, and casinos

Best Things About the Resort:
It had its own shuttle to the slopes, though you could walk if you wanted to.

Resort Experience:
The unit was a little smaller than I prefer, but the hot tubs were wonderful after a long day of skiing. The skiing was awesome. My son quickly made friends with some of the other kids staying there. This was our first time to actually stay right at the ski area, and we loved it. This was our second trip to the Lake Tahoe area. This was better than the first.

Best Things Nearby:
Lake Tahoe! Hiking outside of your back door! The combination of nature up close and convenience of great restaurants, shopping, and historical sites very nearby. Our favorite destination!

Best Things About the Resort:
The coziness of the unit! The location, the staff. We've come to enjoy it so much that we purchased two weeks after our last stay! This will ensure that we can return each year! The upkeep of the property, and the consistency of the staff, makes for a high-quality property, visit after visit!

Resort Experience:
If you're looking for a high-energy, activity-filled resort, this isn't it...at least, at the times we like to go - before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, but before snow season. In other words, we prefer the "off-season." Don't get me wrong - the Activities Directors are top-notch - they will guide you through hikes, on your own or accompanied; and there are bikes, and ping-pong tables for free. But most of the activities are offered to you, and then you aren't pressured to "join!"

We enjoy the gas grills and outdoor eating tables for daytime and nightime eating. Each unit has its' own balcony with chairs and small table, so snacking and early morning coffee can be enjoyed outside with privacy.

We had a couple gorgeous (chilly, sunny) days in late September, early October 2002, and enjoyed lazing around on the hammocks and lawn chairs by the brook that runs through the property. Big, loud blue jays abound, rustling leaves and cool breezes refresh, and quiet, quiet, quiet allow us the chance to recharge each time at this fantastic resort! And, for those of us who never get to watch movies at home, you can rent movies for $2 to watch in your room! The week ALWAYS goes by too fast here.
