Stayed at Hostal La Macarena in mid-June 2008. The hotel is centrally located on a beautiful side street right off of the Plaza Mayor. It is on the second floor of a building (with elevator access),so look carefully to spot the hostal.
Pros:
Great location, close to Plaza Mayor and Palacio Real
About 7 minute walk to the subway; Opera on Line 2 and Line 5
Clean, beds, rooms and bathrooms. Almost spotless.
Small balcony in our double room that overlooked a quiet side street
TV did have a few English channels
Very helpful staff
Free internet access in the lounge
Cost - 79 Euros per night for a double room
Walking distance to many restaurants and shopping
Cons:
We had to pay for our 2 night stay in cash since their credit card machine was not working. This may be just bad luck.
Some of the staff, especially night staff spoke very little English, so brush up on some Spanish.
The warm water in the shower seemed a little on and off. But since we were there during the summer, it was no big deal
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for no-frills, clean and central accommodations.
