Hostal Persal

I was especially careful about researching accommodations. Because I’m not really a youth hostel type, I opt for hostels and pensions, settling on the Persal after reading numerous praises of it. Although the room was basically little more than the size of a walk-in closet and construction was going on during my stay, I was still pleased with the well-located hostal, near the Plaza Santa Ana and Puerto del Sol. The rate of the room included a generous breakfast and the staff was unbelievably warm, treating their guests as if they were staying at the Westin or some other such top-rate hotel.

Far better than you might expect from a hostel. Rooms are comfortable, but the front ones look out over the Plaza and can be noisy. (There were road works when we stayed and this caused traffic jams with cars honking, particularly late at night.) For this reason, it might be better to ask for a room at the back. A very good breakfast was included with our rate. The hostel was ideally situated 5 minutes from Plaza del Sol, a couple of doors up from a jazz bar, and within 50 yards of Plaza Santa Anna, home to several lively bars and restaurants.

For going out at night, the location can''t be beat. It''s at the heart of nightlife. The hotel lobby is nicer than the rooms, which are ugly, but serve the purpose for one night. They were clean and you get towels, soap, shampoo. They have phone and T.V. with English and French stations. I looked at a couple of cheaper hostels, but didn''t like them. The staff here was very friendly, they behave as if you were staying in a fancy hotel.
