The reviews on this hotel weren't wonderful, but we needed a handy place to stay on our little trip out of Madrid. I wanted to stay in Salamanca for at least one full day to see the light changing on the famous buildings and squares. This I did. This hotel is a two minute walk from the Plaza Mayor, and five minutes from the ancient university and cathedrals. Location, location, location! But also, it was unfortunately the same distance from the parties of young people who stay up past dawn having a grand old time!
We had a very large corner room with 3 windows that opened giving us both cross ventilation and plenty of noise when we had them open. The carpet and furnishings and pink bathroom tile were straight out of the '50s. Perhaps original to that time. Service was very good and the breakfast above average for a hotel buffet.
The best feature of this hotel after the location is likely the bar. Although tiny, the air conditioning was strong and cold. The bartender was prompt and in tune with the needs of tired, hot people. Bless him! In addition to our COLD drinks we had large bowls of tapas, the famous little Spanish snacks. Large green olives, almonds, mixed crunchy bits, and dried fruit. You could almost make a meal of it. This became an issue when we settled in to the dining room hours later for what turned out to be a miserable dinner (see separate entry).
This old hotel is certainly not accessible for people who cannot climb stairs. There are elevators but they are extremely slow. Also the bathroom doors are very narrow; almost a situation where you have to slide in sideways.
The best thing however, I was there to do photography. This hotel met my needs. There are dozens of hotels and guest houses in and around Salamanca. It seems you get what you pay for in most cases.
