Sandyport Beaches Resort

Best Things Nearby:
Poop Deck Restaurant and Sandyport Mall is nearby. Sandyport Mall is still under construction with limited stores occupanying the buildings. A small convenient store and liquor store is open. Three eating establishments are open as of 12/2003. You can purchase water from the front desk for $1 a gallon.

Best Things About the Resort:
The 3-bedroom unit was actually three separate units connected by lock-out doors. It provided lots of privacy for more than one family. The grounds are well kept. The resort's staff is extremely nice and helpful. The activities director actually came to our condo to present the activities for the week since we checked in on a Sunday afternoon (and therefore missing the information meeting). There was one resort-sponsored (free) activity during the week. However, there were many activities for an additional charge. A trip to Rose Island on Tuesday and the Wednesday boat trip were the best according people with whom we spoke.

Resort Experience:
As a Gold Crown owner in Florida, I think this resort lacked the quality I am used to at Gold Crown resorts in the States. Others we spoke with during our visit also felt the same way.

The units were very clean and the grounds were well kept. The entire Sandyport area is very nice and very well kept. The private homes across the bay are very expensive and exclusive.

Sandyport Beach is actually across the street from the resort. The Beaches Restaurant was closed for remodeling while we were there.

The beach is very small and was not as clean as I would have liked. There is also a small "beach" area that overlooks the bay -- we used this during our stay. This area is adjacent to the pool(s). The "bay beach" area could have benefited from some attention (clean up and sand grating), but overall, it was nice.

The resort claims to have three pools . . . and they do. However, all three pools are joined to each other. The "beach/pool" bar was not open while we were there.

About the unit itself: there are very few drawers in which to place clothing in the master bedroom. The first set of sheets for the master bed was torn and had holes. However, the bath towels and sheets were exchanged more often than other resorts I have stayed at. The second set of sheets were in slightly better condition.

The 3-bedroom unit did not have a washer and dryer in the unit. The kitchen was very small but adequate. The resort provided enough dishwashing soap and paper towels for the week -- the amount provided was more than other condos I have stayed in.

We brought a small suitcase with food from the States and a small cooler of frozen meat. I would recommend anyone to do the same to save on the amount you will spend on food.

We rode the jitney buses for $1 to Cable Beach and downtown Nassau. We also used the Sandyport Town Mall double-decker bus. This bus runs until 10pm and is free. It will take you as far as Cable Beach and back. You can catch the double-decker by the Sandyport Mall entrance. It's stated to run every 10 minutes. You catch the jitney by the entrance to the resort. Jitneys run until 6pm.

We did have three uninvited "visitors" (roaches) in our condo during the week, but I guess this is to be expected in the tropics.

Television is available in the unit and you receive channels from Miami stations. This was nice to catch the football scores on Sunday.

We brought a CD player/radio and CDs. We ended up listening to the local radio station, which played lots of island music.

The telephone service is expensive. I signed up with AT&T for a calling card that charged $.37 a minute (this is cheap compared to Bahamas prices) to call back to the States. There is a surcharge for each telephone call added to your bill even if you use an 800 number.

The balcony was small but great to have breakfast and dinner on.

We managed to elude the salesperson wanting to give us a "tour". However, our neighbors did not and were stuck for over an hour. Apparently, he just wouldn't take no for an answer.

Speaking of our neighbors . . . we had a floor unit and awoke each morning (7am) to the noise of the kids upstairs pushing a chair across the floor to get cereal out of the cabinet.

I would categorize the resort as very quiet. We saw very few people while we were there. We did attend the resort's "Get Acquainted" happy hour and appetizer function on Wednesday night. Rum punch, conch fritters, Buffalo wings, and veggies and dip were the fare. We played a few games to break the ice. In the lobby, there was a vendor selling jewelry, t-shirts, etc. If you stopped to look, she was determined to sell you something (bargaining), but she would eventually take no for an answer.

I greatly enjoyed my stay at Sandyport Beaches and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Best Things Nearby:
Good restaurants and convenient shopping. Water related activities (waverunners, sail boarding, etc.) are accessible at the nearby resorts on Cable Beach.

Best Things About the Resort:
If you want a quiet resort, this is the place. It was overbooked the week we were there and we rarely saw much going on. A few spurts of activity around the pool was about it. The best thing they offered was the free resort scuba lesson in the pool on Monday morning. The vendor also offered a good deal on an open water dive if you wanted more than a dive in the pool.

Resort Experience:
As a Gold Crown owner in Grand Cayman, I expected more out of this Gold Crown facility. Other T/S owners I spoke to felt the same.

The master one-bedroom units are nice, well laid out, and roomy. If you like having drawers, forget it. Only shelves in the closets and adjoining bedside cabinets.

I requested a two-bedroom and got a master one-bedroom and a much smaller studio, which do not share common doors or a common keycard. Not good if you have small children. I'm not sure a true two-bedroom even exists there.

The safes in both rooms did not have keys.

Room charges don't exist at the pool bar or at any of the privately owned restaurants on the Sandyport property, so contrary to what they say carry cash or a credit card.

If you don't have a washer/dryer in your room, there is only one pay machine on the property.

When we were there, they didn't even have tennis balls or a volley ball for a game on the beach.

The grounds are nice, but a little more attention could be spent on the beach area adjoining the pool.

The staff is friendly and the activities people are helpful when booking day adventures.

The public jitneys can be waved down right outside the front gate. For a buck, it's a great value for getting around. Shopping is convenvient with the Sandyport Old Towne mall next door and a supermarket a few minutes down the road. Downtown Nassau is just 10 minutes away by Jitney.

All in all, not a bad place, but not up to the standards of what I and others thought a Gold Crown Resort should be.

My wife fell in love with Sandyport during our first visit to Nassau in June, 1999 and we ended up purchasing a time share from them. My wife thought it would be a good investment because it is a gold crown resort with RCI so from what I understand it trades real well. Having purchased a week in a condo at Sandyport, my wife wanted to come back and stay for an entire week, which is want we did this past June (2000). We had purchased a one bedroom unit with a jaccuzi and it was really nice.

The living room and dining room are furnished with wicker furniture. There is a full-size kitchen, although we primarily only eat breakfast and make a sandwich for lunch so we never used the oven. The bedroom had a king size bed with a jacuzzi, which I guess doubles as a bath tub because the bath room only had a shower. We also had a balcony that overlooked the canal, that seperates the resort from the permanent residents homes. Quite expensive homes I might add.

Although Sandyport is a time share, they also rent by the night. They also have a sampler package for those wanting to sample life in the Bahamas. If anyone that reads this is interested in that type of package please contact me as I can save you some money. They have hotel rooms, one bedroom, two bedroom and three bedroom condos, if you want to bring the entire family.

We loved our condo at Sandyport and can''t wait to return. The staff of the resort are fantastic. There is also a very good restaurant on the property that I will review in another entry.
