Anne Black Guest House

It was the curious combination of YWCA and Man Fuk Road that drew my attention to this guest house when searching for accommodation. The reasonable price and possibility to book online sealed the deal. For the equivalent of Euro 33 per night I was provided with a single bedroom with washbasin/wardrobe unit, a luggage stand and a television. Right next to my room was the showerroom/toilet, which was perfectly clean and rarely had anyone else in it.

While it is classed as a YWCA, the Anne Black is far from being a hostel or even a guesthouse. Having a large and pleasant lobby, several stories of rooms and its own restaurant, it is in reality a budget (by Hong Kong standards) hotel. Breakfast was included in the offer I’d purchased and there was a choice of 4 meals – 2 western and 2 Chinese. Not being much a breakfast person at the best of times, I decided not to opt for the pork noodles or dumplings and settled on the "French toast" above the bacon and eggs. French toast it certainly was not, but it was interesting and unusual, consisting of an egg-soaked, deep-fried, peanut-butter sandwich served with golden syrup.

I was perfectly satisfied with my stay at Anne Black Guest House. The staff are helpful, the rooms are clean and the price is reasonable. It is situated about 15-20 minutes walk from the Mong Kok A21 (airport bus) bus stop on Nathan Road. The ticket from the airport cost HK$33, which is a steal compared to the HK$100 charge for the express train from the airport to Mong Kok.

Getting to Central from Anne Black Guest House is simple. Make your way to the Star Ferry Pier either by walking south along Nathan Road or by public transport and hop aboard a ferry which will take you to Central in 7 minutes.
