Occidental Grand Cozumel

Best Things Nearby:
We flew into Cancun, road the bus to Playa del Carmen and took the ferry over to Cozumel. If we were to visit again we would definitely fly directly into Cozumel.

Best Things About the Resort:

Resort Experience:
Cozumel is a beautiful island; however, we did not have the best experience. We arrived after a tropical storm, so we had trouble actually getting from the airport to the hotel since the roads were flooded. When we arrived we were greeted by staff that knew little to no English, which was frustrating. There was a small gift shop that had flood damage, so we had to walk to the neighboring resort to use their shop and MAC machine. Most businesses on the island did not accept credit cards. The other surprising fact was that there is no 800 connection on the island, so phone cards do not work. The only way to make a call is through the hotel, which is costly. First class mail that was sent from the hotel did not arrive in the States until a month after our return. The food at the buffet was not labeled so you had no idea what you were eating. The pool was constantly out of fresh towels. When you requested some from the staff they would disappear and hours would pass without anyone returning with towels. Each day the electricity would go out and you would lose water pressure. Cable was lost several times a day also. The Sonora Grill (Steak House) and Los Olivos (Mediterranean Specialties) both require reservations and have a dress code. There aren’t many seatings each night so it is best to get up early to try to get a reservation.

We came expecting a luxurious week at an all inclusive 5 star resort, which was not the case. So as long as you come not expecting too much you will be able to enjoy your time at Occidental. If we return to Cozumel we will most likely check out another resort since there wasn’t anything special about this one.

Occidental Grand Cozumel - summer 2003

Occidental Grand Cozumel - summer 2003

Because last year’s experience was so delightful, we decided to spend two weeks at Occidental Grand Cozumel (read last year’s entry first).

As we drove in, we saw that the vegetation had taken hold and was so lush. We were excited. But the greeting when we arrived at the resort desk had changed -- we were not offered champagne and cold washcloths, and the plastic bracelet we must wear has international telephone advertising on it! What happened here??????

My intent is not to discourage you from coming here, but rather to prepare you for small problems that can create stress when arriving after a long trip or with high expectations of a 5-star resort. Making you aware will help you to deal with them more quickly and allow you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

This time, the resort was booked to capacity – 50% large Mexican families, 25% American families, and 25% couples, with very few Europeans.

All restaurants, except for the buffet and the pizzeria, require dinner reservations. Each restaurant allows only 12 people per half hour to be seated. There are three restaurants – quick calculations show that only 1/3 of the guests can be accommodated on any given night. The reservations must be made in person starting at 8am. By 9am, there are no more reservations available. Guests start lining up at the desk by 7:15am.

No more free diving and snorkeling trips included – you must pay for them now. Snorkeling equipment can be checked out for 3 hours daily and must be returned after each use. This year one must obtain a "day pass" to go to Allegro. You no longer can make dinner reservations there either.

Only one waitress serves drinks by the pool and beach – you must stand in line at the service bar in the palapa restaurant. Shady areas at the pool and beach are spoken for by 9am.

Otherwise, the resort is more lush because the vegetation is a year older – the grounds are well landscaped and manicured. Rooms are incredibly clean. The beach is starting to replenish from the sand bags that were placed there last year after the storm. Workers are friendly – speak English in various levels of expertise. Food is good, not gourmet. Brand name liquor is available by request, but there is only one red and one white wine served free of charge.

Entertainment of some sort takes place each evening – a Mexican trio wandering through the restaurants, a duo in the lounge, a trio at the plaza with dancing and cocktails, a Mexican show, and, of course, the late night disco.

Occidental Grand is still one of the better all-inclusive resorts. We regret that it did not rise to the level of Royal Hideaway. Will it happen or did they lose their chance?? Moan and groan and you’ll spoil your vacation; learn to play by the rules and it’ll be wonderful.

Bakubung Game Lodge

Bakubung Game Lodge

Bakubung means "people of the hippo". A series of small buildings surround the hippo pool in a horseshoe shape.

Driving up to the lodge, you realize you are in the middle of the bush and on the edge of Pilanesberg National Park. Impala and wildebeast are seen grazing along the road. When we first arrived in our room, we went out to the patio to find three Vervet monkeys hanging out on the wall separating our patio from the next. They had jumped up to the second floor balcony, snuck into someone's room and stole the little milk cartons from the tea tray. They didn't seem to mind us watching them and even let us get pretty close. The gate around the hippo pool was at the end of our patio. It also housed several warthogs and guineafowl. The hippo pool was in a distance but with binoculars, we could see at least one hippo's eyes peaking out of the water.

Our room was a standard hotel room with all the amenities you would expect: TV, phone, mini-bar, tea maker, ac, etc. It was clean and well-appointed. Apartments were also available for families and many activities are provided on site such as volleyball, tennis, a pool and a playground. The hotel can help you plan activities such as game drives, hot air balloon rides, trips to Sun City and excursions to the nearby lion park.

Dinner was served in the main lodge. There are two sittings, 6pm and 8pm, and all meals are included in the price. Dinner is always buffet style and you can choose between the carvery and the barbecue or a mixture of each. There was loads of food to choose from but don't forget to leave room for dessert.
