EMI Sun Village Beach Resort

If you are in need of ultimate relaxation, the Sun Village Resort and Spa-Cofresi in Puerto Plata is the perfect place for you; just watch out for lots of rain, even outside the rainy season.

The grounds are well kept (even during torrential rain storms), the resort is quiet, and the spa atmosphere prevails throughout the lush cobblestone paths. From the landscaping to the pools, Sun Village is well kept. There are beautiful plants and flowers around every corner, and even though it rained (poured) every single day of my 6-day stay, there were always grounds people sweeping up the debris and water from the walkways. I even met the resort manager, Mr. Jimmy, who I spotted as early as 7am and as late as 11pm doing his rounds and making sure that everything was just so for all of us.

The pools are crystal clear and numerous—7 in total, with a few exclusively for adults. There were always plenty of lounge chairs , and when it really rained, I liked reading under the little huts at the Serenity Pool with soft music playing in the background. I think the lower pools by the beach would have been livelier if the weather had been better. The most active area was the bar by the hot tub on the beach. People who were more enthusiastic about chatting and drinking seemed to hang out there.

I booked an all-inclusive package with Cheap Caribbean, which meant I stayed in a standard room: simple yet adequate. The room was cleaned and stocked every morning I hung the service sign on my door. For more picky travelers, there were luxurious suites and massive villas. *Tip: If you plan to spend the majority of your time in the room sleeping, then save your money and go standard!

The public areas, like the lobby, theatre (stage) and buffet dining area, were always clean and well staffed with friendly and accommodating people. Same goes for the restaurants. Servers were always quick to bring exactly what I asked for and were equally speedy in setting and re-setting tables so that guests rarely had to wait.

Beware travel addicts: this vacation was a lesson in relaxation for me! I am typically a travel warrior, waking up early and going to bed late in order to make heads and tails of every little part of a new place and all that surrounds it. The rain made this trip challenging for me because I couldn’t take advantage of the pool and beach due the weather, the lack of safety in the surrounding area prevented me from doing any excursions, and the entertainment was nonexistent. What I did manage to do was to drink a lot of (strong) drinks, eat a lot, work the food and drink off at the gym, and do a good amount of reading. Overall I had a very nice time, but based on way I like to travel, I would not return to this location.

We went to Sun Village and spent a day there. We had seen one of the villas, and it was new and beautiful. The grounds at the resort and the pools were beautiful. The restaurants were very nice, and the food was very good. All the resort grounds were just so nice. The villa that we were shown had very nice luxury furniture in it, bathrobes in the closets, a nice bar, nice terraces, and they had views of the beach.

The restaurant we ate at was the Mediterranean one, and the food was excellent. The service was excellent, and everyone was so nice. I could stay here forever! At night, we visited the club, and it was very nice. They had premium drinks there also--not just domestic drinks. The club didn't open until 11pm.

There were several pools: some for kids, some for adults, and one area for topless sunbathers, away from the kids. The beach furniture was very nice and comfortable also.

EMI Sun Village Beach Resort

The Sun Village Beach Resort is a beautiful new property located along the shores of Playa Cofresi, about five kilometers west of Puerto Plata. Most guests here book all-inclusive packages, where you get three meals a day and beverages while sporting a colorful wristband. Being the travelling renegade, I booked a room-only reservation.

When checking in, I was handed a folder containing a site map, activities program calendar, and cards for the door access and towel rental. A bellhop led me to my room, a bewildering downhill journey past pools, canopies, buildings, paths. I saw an older gentleman being led about by his two struggling family members; someone with so little mobility should not be booked in one of the "lower" rooms.

My standard Garden Court room had colorful rattan furniture featuring a queen size bed, sofa, chairs, cable TV, mini-fridge, balcony. There is very cold air conditioning and a ceiling fan. The small bathroom had a sink and shower stall, and the toilet's water pressure tended to be low.

My favorite activity was strolling along the mile-long Cofresi Beach. Every morning, locals sweep up debris washed ashore from the Atlantic Ocean or deposited from the coconut trees overhead. The official line at the resort bans topless sunbathing. There are several pools on-property, including one geared for kids with a waterfall and water slide. Sporting activities include volleyball, water polo, pool table, nature walks, etc.

There are several restaurants on-site, with more to come in the near future. The Sun Village Theater, with a faux Roman style, is a nightly gathering point for guests. One night there was karaoke, while one night there was a surprisingly decent five-piece band playing danceable merengue and salsa music. The hotel staff is enormously friendly, and that rubs off on the guests. Since the resort is rather isolated, the staff does recommend a taxi if you go off-property. I walked along a local dirt road near the beach and was honked at by every passing vehicle.

Here are the minor quibbles that should be ironed out in due time. The front desk seems a little slow in bill discrepancies and the process of checking in and out. I was erroneously charged for the shuttle bus from the airport to the resort, and then I could not reserve a shuttle to the airport so I had to pay a few extra dollars for a taxi. One poor chap insisted that he did not make a call from his room (the cost was around a dollar), and he had to haggle vehemently to have it waived. A resort that strives to attain a certain stature in the tourism community tends to wash these tiny costs away with no problem whatsoever. One night there was a five-minute power outage. This probably tends to happen several times a week, as I recall returning to my room one day to see that the time on my room's digital clock was incorrect.
