Sleepwell Hostel

I stayed here a couple of years ago. Had a bit of a mini breakdown when I couldn't find it, and then wanted to kick myself for walking right over it two or three times. It's located down what looks like a little alleyway and is in reality only a five minute walk or so from the train station. I felt like the area right outside of it was a little shady after dark, but it was extremely close to the Grand Place and shopping. Some people complain that it is very institutional-like, but I didn't feel like this was a negative aspect. It felt more like a no-stars hotel than a typical youth hostel. The staff were very rude and impolite, but at least it was clean. Very clean. Breakfast was the typical hostel fare-toast and tea.

The biggest problem I had with it was the check-out. The desk was not manned 24 hours and when it was time to leave I had an early train. I ended up waiting in front of the desk with a bunch of other people and when 10 minutes passed and they still hadn't opened it, we all just slipped our keys under the door and walked out.

Directions: If you've arrive at Gare du Nord by bus or train, walk south down rue du Progres/Vooruitgang. When you cross the busy avenue du Boulevard/Bolwerklaan, continue for one more block, then take a left onto rue de la Blanchisserie, then a right at rue Damier.

Another hostel choice in Brussels is Sleepwell. I prefer Jacques Brel (see separate entry), but this isn´t a bad choice either. Sleepwell is very close to Gare du Nord. From the station, just walk south towards the city for a few blocks until you run into Rue du Damier.

This hostel is very modern, with card keys for the doors, Internet access, and new furniture. The rooms range from doubles to six person dorms. The larger rooms have sinks in the rooms. The prices are quite reasonable, as little as $12 per person in the larger rooms. For all guests, free showers and toilets are in the hall, but you have to bring your own towel.

I have stayed here on a few occasions, and have found different members of the staff to be more friendly and helpful than others. On the worst occasion, I checked in with a friend, but we had made separate reservations. Her name was not on the list, and the employee was initially very unhelpful and rude. Eventually, though, we ended up in the same room and everything was fine. Other experiences have been much more positive.

Now I can''t knock the Sleepwell too much, cause it was cheap-dirt cheap. Our double room including breakfast cost a total of $30, including breakfast.

The room itself was small with two twin beds. The bathroom was located in the hall and I give the shower pressure two thumbs up.

The annoying part was the strict 10am-4pm lockout. There was one day, we felt like we were going to freeze to death outside and couldn''t come in. The doors lock automatically and you are unable to get in until exactly 4pm. They don''t seem to clean the rooms during the day so I''m not sure what purpose the lockout serves. Make sure you don''t forget anything in your room, you won''t be able to get back in.

You will find a lot of school groups and younger people stay here and often it is pretty noisy when you are trying to sleep.

The breakfast in the morning was cereal and bread, your typical hostel breakfast, which was fine. There is a TV room combination bar area downstairs.

The location is good and central, within walking distance to most sights.
This is one of those weigh the pros and cons kind of place but like I said before it was $30!
