My Favorite Budget Hotel in Hilo

My Favorite Budget Hotel in Hilo

This is where I stay at if I need to find a hotel in Hilo. Sometimes I need to stay overnight in Hilo (for a sporting or a school event) since the drive home is about an hour away. This cute hotel is a low rise hotel, unlike its high rise neighbors - the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and the Naniloa Volcanoes Hotel. What I like about this hotel is the Hawaiian decor and ambiance. Uncle Billy's is one of the two least-expensive places to stay along Hilo's Hotel row, Banyan Drive (Hilo Seaside is also another inexpensive low rise hotel). This is an oceanfront budget hotel in a great location, and they have wonderful car/room packages. You enter via a tiny lobby that is dressed up in Polynesian style, complete with thatched like decor and tapa covered walls. The rooms are very simple, complete with a bed, TV, phone, closet, coffee maker and soap and clean towels in the bathroom. Since the walls are thin, it can get very noisy at night but who can complain with budget rates and a very friendly and accomodating staff? The hotel rates also include a continental breakfast served up in a small room downstairs next to the lobby. There are a lot of locals that stay at this hotel for local events. I would recommend staying here just for the old Hawaii charm of the hotel, the friendly staff, and for the inexpensive rates.

We decided to get a cheap room in HILO rather than drive back to the Kona side of island after visiting Volcanoes N.P. We had a very basic room with 4 twin beds, a refrigerator and a small bathroom. It was raining which made it very humid in the room. We could not close the windows and run the A/C as they didn't shut properly, but it was better than camping in the rain.

This ain''t the Ritz but I liked it. The price was right and it was on the water and close to attractions. The Liliuokalani Gardens (japanese style) were right next door and the on site restaurant featured hula dancers. The mother and daughter were beautiful and precious respectively.
