The rooms had a funky jungle feel. We stayed in the writer''s room, which was spacious, with an outdoor shower and kitchen area. The whole place, however, is pretty close to the road, and I should have known it would be tough to sleep when I saw they''d put earplugs out. Not fun to have to do that on your vacation. Also, the bugs and spiders and the occasional cockroach treaded on our territory and made it uncomfortable to sleep. Apparently this is more often the norm on the Big Island, but I didn''t like it. That said, the people who work there are nice and willing to offer advice on what to do. You can rent snorkeling equipment from them or find a helicopter ride to go on or get dining recommendations. One reason I wanted to stay there was because I thought they''d offer yoga. There''s a great spot for it, but alas no classes. Dragonfly is a unique experience and I loved the decor but wouldn''t go back unless they could alleviate the bugs and find a way to block the traffic noise.

Dragonfly Ranch

The Dragonfly is a secluded B&B surrounded by lush vegetation. Your room is open air (screens are all that separates you from the outside on two sides of the room), but you have plenty of privacy. The sounds from outside (the wind, the bugs) makes for a very relaxing nights sleep. As for the room, it was fairly nondescript except for an awesome hammock (and the outdoor ambience) which I enjoyed for a long nap. Another interesting feature, you shower outside your room in a private shower stall created by the vegetation. Once I got used to the idea, I really enjoyed this shower experience. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention our host. She was an interesting character who had wholeheartedly embraced 'natural living' (herbs, aromatherapy, relaxation, etc.). Another guest at the lodge was equally interesting. This coupled with some interesting pets made the breakfast enlightening and memorable. Another plus is being only two minutes from the beach where you will have the pleasure of swimming with the dolphins. The Dragonfly is definitely a must for anyone looking for a romantic and truly unique Hawaiian experience.
