Bauhaus Hostel

I can’t believe this place gets so many good reviews. Am I missing something? Did I stay in the ghetto part of the hostel? I do not know. I found it to be extremely unclean and the people who worked there rude.

To begin with, the pub area was rocking at night, but in the daytime when it was well-lit, it was dirty. Dirty dishes piled everywhere, the floor unswept, etc.

The beds were hard and the carpets in the rooms stained. I sat on the carpet at one point and then wished I had not.

It was difficult taking a shower the next morning because the bathrooms were disgusting. People had not flushed the toilets and there was vomit in places that had dried and not been cleaned up. I could not bring myself to sit on any of the toilets, even after I searched around the hostel for a cleaner bathroom. I ended up having to use the men’s shower because I stood in line for the women’s for thirty minutes and almost missed my train. Let’s just say that I felt as dirty when I stepped out of the shower as I did when I went in. It’s not in a very convenient location either. It was a little far to walk and I found the tram system confusing. Oh well. Now I know.

The Bauhaus is a fairly standard hostel. Nice bar downstairs, and the room (I was in a four-bed one) was clean. The staff were all really nice.

The bathrooms were OK - apart from the fact that the showers had one of those 'push' taps that you have to keep pressing in order for the water to flow. When you took your hand off to do anything, the water stopped. Not great, but I guess it stops people from having long showers. I wouldn't have liked to have to contend with it in the winter, though!!

My major gripe was that my room (Number 2) was right above the bar. The bar stayed open till 4am on Friday and Saturday nights (the two nights I was there). I didn't get any sleep. (I heard other rooms farther away were fine in this respect...)

All in all, I'm glad I stayed here - it was very cheap (about 13 euros per night) and I met some really nice people here. Without them, my visit to Bruges would have been much less fun. But, after 2 nights of 2-3 hours of sleep because of the bar noise, I was very happy to get to Brussels and my nice, private, single, hotel room!

Our room wasn't horrible-it was clean, with a closet and a table. It was dark and damp however and it made me nervous that it was ground level.

The walls were thin and we could hear our neighbours come home late and night and anything else they chose to do-if you get my drift.

Bathroom is located in the hallway and seemed to be clean. There was no kitchen but a restaurant with great food. You could get breakfast for a small fee.

We paid $47 Canadian for our private room here.

This hostel is listed as one of the Top 10 in all of Europe. Here are the reasons we enjoyed it:

*Great location
*Excellent dinners
*Includes a bar (where even some locals take their beer!)
*Great place to meet other travelers
*Nearby laundromat

Dorm-style rooms from 380-1300BF (depending on number of beds). Breakfast available for extra (approximately 60F). Reception 8a-2a. Reservations recommended a few days in advance.

To get there from the train station, take bus #6. Tell the driver where you want to go. You'll be taken to the appropriate stop and given directions from there.
