Hotel Attalos

As I got leather sandals fitted by a poet-sandal maker-Vogue magazine spread, I realized the charm of Greece is its effortless mix of old—really, really, crumbling old—and new.

Hotel Attalos, like the rest of Athens, is old and new. It was renovated in 2003, and is air-conditioned and completely comfortable. The hotel has a central location, great rooms (we stayed in two, one before we left for the islands and one after returning), and a rooftop bar with a view of the Acropolis.

We met people from all over the world at Attalos, and when a transport strike forced some groups to stay an extra day, no one seemed too bothered. People were relieved they had a cozy hotel with an accommodating staff, and waited out the strike there.

Attalos was our first pleasant surprise and indicative of our entire stay in Athens. I’d heard from friends that the city was dirty and crowded, but I found it delightful in every way. Maybe it’s a result of an overhaul for the 2004 Olympics, but the city is a gorgeous and friendly place. From our base at Hotel Attalos, we explored many different neighborhoods, and, of course, all of the ancient ruins.

This hotel is supposed to be completely renovated! I got the feeling that it's slowly going down. I find it too pricy for this quality. However, I have heard that Athens is famous for its bad quality accomodation so we stuck to it for the acropolis view from our teras.

Don't do the breakfast. There are 2 milkbars nearby; one is called 'Everest,' a chain spread all over the city. You can breakfast with exotic pies or breads and big greek coffee for only 0.7 Cents.

This budget hotel is centrally located on a main street in the Monastiraki area, just north of the Acropolis. The highlight of this hotel is its rooftop bar, which has outdoor seating with splendid views of the surrounding areas including the Acropolis. Order a reasonably-priced drink, pull up a seat, and soak in the fine views, day or night. During my last night in Athens, I enjoyed a couple of beers while gazing at the stars above and the dreamy Acropolis illuminated in the distance. The rooftop is a great place to chat with like-minded travelers from around the world.

The decent-sized rooms at the Attalos have features like air-conditioning, cable television, and a little bathtub. You can take the elevator up and walk down if you wish, as there are little prints on the walls and a sitting area on each floor near the stairs. The hotel has a small lobby, which will seem smaller if the fellow at the front desk is smoking. While this is not the poshest hotel, you get good value for the 49-euro rate. You can book tours at the front desk counter (trips to Delphi, for instance) and you can store your bags as well.

Hotel Attalos

Hotel Attalos is a cheap little hotel in the Monastiraki section of Athens. When the air conditioning actually works, the place isn't bad. A rooftop bar overlooks much of Athens and, especially, the Acropolis, which is lit up at nighttime. The view from the roof is staggering. You can sit there with an Amstel beer and just gaze at the ancient wonder of the Parthenon.

The location can't be beat. It's few minutes from the touristy Plaka district, or the Monistiraki metro stop, which takes you right to the port of Piraeus. The Athens Flea Market is also right around the corner.

Rooms are around $35 for a double with air conditioning (which wasn't working when I was there). The service is indeed very good and the men working at the desk are as professional as they get.

If you stay in Athens, especially during the summer, get a room with air conditioning. It's by all means worth the extra charge.
