Mayan Palace Acapulco, Tour by Van, Sightseeing, Dining Out Review

Truly amazing. We visit the Mayan resort every year, it is our favorite. Been there three times now. After several visits using RCI exchanges, we ended up purchasing a week at their resort in Nuevo Vallarta as well.

The airport is very close by. Even so, the private taxi ride from there to the hotel is expensive, thanks to Rudy, we happened to know about a collective service to the Mayan Resort is only a few dollars per person. For Sighseeing We were lucky enough to find Rodolfo Rudy Fregoso of Tour by Van Acapulco, he arranged all our transportation needs in a fantastic way, we found him thru a couple friend of ours, just google his name and you will find him. We can recommend to eveyone any time!
Going to the airport at the end of your stay isn't too bad, and you can arrange this with any of your cab drivers during the week. They'll be there waiting for you at checkout. With cabs, I usually negotiate a good price, and then give them the difference from their asking price as a tip.
- The beach is fantastic, even in March. The water is clean and warm. The number of vendors on the beach are limited, so it's not too bad.
- The beds are very hard, which is the Mexican standard. The rooms are air conditioned and elegant, yet spartan. After laying in the sun and swimming/drinking all day, you won't have much problem going to sleep. ;-)
- The water park at the end of resort is a blast, especially for the kids. .

- Restaurants in town are a lot cheaper, and the food is much better. The resort is about 25 mins. from town, so it's not really that convienent to go every night. We usually load up on junk food during the day, and eat in the room at night.
- The daily entertainment is fun, but not overbearing. At some resorts all you hear is the guy on the loudspeaker trying to get people interested in water aerobics. Not here.

That's about all. We love this place, and plan to visit a Vidafel resort every year. Have Fun in Acapulco!!

Great Getaway at Mayan Palace - Tour Guide Sebastian

Just returned from a 7 day stay over the holidays at the Mayan Palace. My friend and I were looking for a getaway place with sand, sun and beach and came across Acapulco. We chose Acapulco, and it has become one of the best locations among many places we have visited. We knew we didn’t want to drive ourselves around or take structured tours so we procured the services of certified guide Sebastián Hernández before we came to Acapulco. I sent e-mails to a handful of potential guides. His was one of the first ones that came back with a response, and the only one that contained information on just about anything we would want to do or see during our stay. It was extremely helpful. We printed it out and read through it on the plane and highlighted some of the things we were interested in. Sebastián picked us up at the airport, shuttled us to the local grocery store, and during the week he took us to several of the places that we had highlighted in his document. Contact Sebastián prior to your arrival if you plan to visit Acapulco.

We had an incredible time. The rooms at the Mayan Palace were nicely decorated, spacious and clean. The staff was very accommodating. No matter what type of room you have, the service is the same, GREAT and ATTENTIVE. There are many places to eat within the complex and lots of things to do on-site.

The city is large, and we tried to see as much of it as possible. The scenery from every vantage point was breathtaking. The people are very friendly in Acapulco. A shopkeeper in the flea market offered us a shot of tequila to welcome us to the city. We had to oblige his hospitality. Acapulco is a very clean city. The prices are good, and the roads are excellent. This is now a very well developed area. The city is very diversified with everything from shopping, arts, history and all the water sports you can imagine. There truly is something for everyone.

We were very happy with Sebastián based on the recommendations on this site at Acapulco forum as our tour guide. He drives a comfortable, immaculate Town Car and gave us a wonderful tour of the city our first time out. We went to the Chapel of Peace where we took lots of pics, had a great table at lunch to watch the cliff divers’ performance, and then to the flea market. We also went to the Flamingos Hotel and visited Diego Rivera’s mural where he gave us a very detailed overview of the work. On another trip we went to the silver mining town of Taxco and to see the Xochicalco archaelogical site which dates back to 200-300 BC. Our first stop in Taxco was at a silver factory where we got to see the artisans making fine pieces of silver jewelry. We shopped and got an automatic 50% discount. After lunch, we visited the Santa Prisca 18th century baroque church. It felt like we were back in the time period. There was a nice local guide who gave us an in-depth tour of the church with all its nuances. We were impressed by how much the city is conserving its history.

We wanted to mingle with the locals in ACA as we like to try off the beaten path places. Our friendly guide knew just where to take us on a Thursday night (Pozole Day) in the state of Guerrero. We went to a restaurant/cantina in the countryside for fabulous food and dancing where we were the only Americans there. The people were so friendly and made us feel at home. We had a blast.

Overall, this was one of our best trips to Mexico. I highly recommend the Mayan Palace resort and our new friend Sebastián. We got to see a lot more than we would have on our own, and he made all that possible. It was well worth it. He just made us feel very comfortable, safe and very welcome in his country.

The swimming pools and other facilties were excellent, as were the friendly staff and their services. Our 1 BR unit was old and had shopworn sofas and kitchen. The restaurant food was average and overpriced. Our excellent tour guide, Angel Flores (angel_enacapulco@yahoo.com.mx)provided airport and shopping transportation and took us on several nice tours. He carefully drives a new Impala sedan with air conditioning. Angel is extremely friendly and is fluent in English. His rates are very reasonable and he is always punctual. We recommend him very highly.

The Grand Mayan Acapulco

Best Things Nearby:
Horseback riding on the beach!

Best Things About the Resort:
It is away from all the craziness of Acapulco Bay! The resort is near the airport and just a 20-minute cab ride into the busy part of town. It is an enormous resort that boasts the world's largest swimming pool.

Resort Experience:
The Grand Mayan Acapulco is an exquisite resort. Our one-bedroom unit featured a private swimming pool on our balcony and Jacuzzi tub. There were granite countertops throughout, stainless appliances, and his and hers sinks in the bathroom. The only disappointment was that some of the things that you are used to having provided in a timeshare, such as coffee, aren't provided. There is a Wal-Mart Supercenter about 5 minutes away by taxi. This was an inexpensive place for groceries. Housekeeping came about three times per day, and there were staff members everywhere, always cleaning, polishing, and keeping things looking great.

The pools were very clean. There was even an enormous pool area dedicated to kids, with huge plastic toys and inner tubes for them to play with. The pools were just amazing, with rock features and waterfalls throughout. The resort itself has a huge pond just beyond the entrance full of all kinds of fish. Here there are sculptures everywhere and marble and travertine tile floors and walls.

There are three restaurants, one of which is a buffet with a changing theme nightly. The other is ocean-view seafood dining. The third was closed for renovation while I was there. The least expensive place to eat was at the poolside snack bar. The biggest culinary disappointment for me was that there was nowhere to get Mexican food at the resort beyond nachos and guacamole at the snack bar! I had to travel into the bay area for Mexican food, because there are no restaurants nearby the resort. There is an upscale bar that has 2-for-1 happy-hour specials nightly.

The Grand Mayan is a 20-minute taxi ride from Acapulco Bay, which is where all the famous nightlife is located, as well as the open-air flea markets, where you can try your hand at bargaining for beautiful Mexican goods. This is definitely where I'd recommend getting your authentic food!

The resort sponsors many day trips, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, trips to see the cliff divers (a must-see), tours around Old Acapulco, and other things of general interest. I went during the last part of May and beginning of June. I packed long pants and long-sleeved shirts, but I didn't need them, even at night, unless I was indoors somewhere that was air-conditioned. Part of the resort is inside, and the other part is open-air, so it can get humid when you're just walking around the grounds. Pack accordingly!

The resort is the most beautiful place we have ever stayed. The rooms are big and clean. The maid service comes twice a day: in the morning to clean and in the evenings to turn down the beds. Anything you need, you will find there.
