The Clay Hotel

The Clay Hotel

The Clay Hotel is separated into a hotel and a hostel. The part I stayed in was the hotel, and to tell you the truth, it wasn't the best hotel I have been in, but anyway it was a good choice if your budget is limited and you prefer to be in a good area rather than in a fancy hotel.
The location could not have been better, at least not for a 17-year old. Anyway, it is right in Espanola Way, two blocks away from Ocean Drive and the beach, and walking distance from Lincoln Road Mall.
If you are not looking for luxury, this is definitely a good option.
It was clean and the staff was pretty nice. If the next time I don't have enough money to go to The Delano, I will be back here!

The Clay Hotel is a decent place to stay for the budget-minded traveler to Miami. The location is terrific--two blocks from the beach, across the street from major nightclubs, and directly on Espanola Way, home to the weekly Sunday open-air market. It is also just a few blocks from the attractions of Lincoln Road.

My first impression of the hotel was that of frustration. I couldn't find my room--perhaps because the "multilingual" staff explained the directions in Spanish. I understood half of what he said, but figured I'd find it on my own. Well, after lugging my suitcase around the main building, through a courtyard, and up the stairs, I found a maid who explained that my room was actually in another building across the street!

Well, I found my room--I had a single with a private bath. The room was typical hostel-small, with a single bed, nightstand, phone, and my own bathroom. It was decorated in a tropical style, with lots of Florida pink. My room was technically one of their hotel rooms, as opposed to hostel rooms, which are the shared dorm-style rooms.

The single-sex dorm rooms are about $25/night, whereas mine was $80. I was there in winter, and prices go down in the off-peak summer months.

I didn't spend much time in the hotel itself. The lobby had friendly and helpful staff, there were all sorts of tourist brochures in a rack when you come in. There's also a room with lockers of different sizes to store your valuables. Upstairs is a lounge/computer room with pay Internet access.

I stayed in the hotel portion of the accommodations.

Room was small, but clean. Had cable TV and air conditioning, but the view was of an air shaft (and a room across the air shaft - don't those people own clothing??). Laundry on site.

Hotel staff were friendly and accommodating - carried my heavy scuba gear bags up the two flights of stairs since there was no elevator.

Suitable for short stays - but not a luxury spot, for sure.

Clay Hotel/Hostel

Nestled on the corner of quaint Española Way and bustling Washington Avenue, The Clay Hotel/Hostel is a find for the money.

This is a hostel/hotel but it is one of the nicer hostels that I''ve experienced and the location cannot be beat. It is older and needs a bit of maintenance work, rooms could be repainted, but it is just so incredibely cheap for Miami Beach.

They do accept reservations and book far in advance during season. The rooms range from $40.00 to $99.00 depending on season for the hotel side and the hostel side rates range from $13.00 to $17.00 per person! Really!

The outside is prettier than the inside!!
