The Galleon Resort

The Location of this resort is its best aspect!!! Located on the north end of the island it is waterfront, next to the Hyatt and within a block of Mallory Square. All of the Sebago waterfront activities start from the waterfront a block east of the location. A parking pass is included for one vehicle per reservation which is wonderful...but there are far more passes than spaces so parking becomes competitive so if you move your car out—there is a terrific chance you won’t get one when you come back...the parking is so very tight you need a couple of people out of the car directing into the tight spaces.

Were had reserved a One bedroom (housing 4) and a hotel room (housing 2), we booked another room for our last two in a close place called the Westwinds. Upon arrival we were told they put together the reservations which resulted in us having a two bedroom unit. That was fine for us. Space is at a premium at the resort and every inch has been efficiently utilized. The units are smaller than most time shares. The smaller bedroom would have been the hotel unit and it contained a queen-size bed a tiny table with two chairs and a compact refrigerator. If you stayed in that unit alone it would be very tight, but that wasn’t a problem for us since the unit was unlocked to the larger one bedroom unit. The bedroom for the one bedroom had a king size bed and a balcony to the water side.

The staff isn’t stellar but will assist you with any difficulties with your persistence.

There is a nice sized pool, which is set on the ocean side. There is a ocean beach which is about 30 feet in length. They have a bar at the waterfront which does allow for a great sunset view, which at Key West every day is all about the sunset!

Galleon

We did not have a good experience at the Galleon. There was a roach and a spider in the shower and the windows were dirty and would not open. The second night we woke up to some scratching at our door and called the front desk. No one answered, so we called the security number, and after explaining what was going on, the guy finally said, "Okay, I'll come over." We assumed it was a bird or stray cat, but we'll never know because the security guard didn't come to look, the front-desk person gave us the "it's not my job" look when we asked if the guard reported anything.

On top of all this, the staff at the Galleon sucked! We called the front desk at 9am to see if the check-out time was really 10am. It was. And when we didn't show up at the front desk promptly at 10am, they were on the phone to us at 10:06am, telling us we had to "vacate the premises immediately." We had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with three Galleon staff people, and they were all rude and inconsiderate!

Accommodations at the Galleon were very nice. There were spacious rooms and a great view of the marina where we watched fishing boats and diving boats come and go each day. It is a Gold Crown resort.

For a resort with the highest RCI rating, we were a bit disappointed in a few things. The handle on the microwave was broken and they had to bring us a new one to use for the week. There was also a broken light switch and the kitchen was furnished with just the basics—we had to request a nonstick skillet, potato peeler, etc. To get these, I had to sign papers saying I would return them to the front desk or be charged $15.99 for the skillet and $6.99 for the potato peeler. But the biggest surprise was the lack of supplies, with only two trash bags, one little package of dishwasher soap, and no dishwashing liquid, at a GOLD CROWN place. If you want more, it is available: 3.75 oz. dish liquid, $1.25; Kleenex, $0.99; dishwasher soap, $0.50; Tide, $1; and paper towels $1.

There are plenty of wonderful places to eat on the island, lots of tours available, and so much history. Mel Fischer's Museum is worth the visit. The Conch Train tour was very good—a 90-minute narrated tour. Parking was a nightmare—the area below one of the buildings was being used for construction materials and workers who were repairing the docks and decks after Hurricane Rita went through a few days before. The places where parking was available were VERY tight. We had to back up three or four times to get in a space and then had to squeeze out of a barely open door.

Best Things Nearby:
Everything is nearby!! The Galleon is pretty much located at the end of Duval Street. The resort even has its own small beach!

Best Things About the Resort:
Location, location, location! The man who works at the pool is very nice and helpful.

Resort Experience:
Our unit overlooked the pool and ocean. Sitting on the balcony was wonderful. The warm, tropical breezes while having a cocktail (or two!) were a delight. We also loved being so close to all the action on Duval Street.

Best Things Nearby:
Great restaurants, marina with boat rentals, close to shops, Mallory Park.

Best Things About the Resort:
Staff is friendly and knowledgable about the area. The unit is clean, and the furnishings look like new. There are five floors and there are elevators. Most units have balconies with a wonderful view. The pool is lovely, and there is a small beach.

Resort Experience:
This was our first time in Key West, and definitely not our last. This resort is top notch. The resort snack bar was closed, this partcular week but locals say the food is good. There are many mom and pop restaurants, both famous and not so well known, and they are wonderful. There were children around, and the resort welcomes children, but Key West in general is an adult playground. We take our grandchildren every year to a timeshare, but this was a week for relaxation and romance. I would love to own a week at this resort, so that I could go every year.
