What can you say about the Ritz Carlton?

It is so well located, so expertly staffed and so beautiful.

I was there on business and had an afternoon off, and they suggested I stoll down to Union Square, just a block away. After doing some window shopping, I strolled into Chinatown, and spent a lovely afternoon. The best part was I was just a few short blocks from the hotel.

The rooms are big and very comfortable, with lots of closet space. The only downside to the room was that it was soooo far from the elevator. They don''t give frequent flyer miles either.

I ate in the hotel restaurant one night. It was supposed to the the less formal restaurant, but don''t let anyone tell you it is casual. I was definitely underdressed. Good service, ok food.

Concierge was helpful. There was one night I was scheduled to eat alone, and he booked me at a restaurant where you could sit at a "chefs table" and watch the kitchen. Unfortunately when I got there, the owner''s wife was coming and that table was unavailable. I don''t know whether the mixup was the restaurants or the hotel''s.

Even the valets outside were extremely helpful and friendly.

OK, this is an expensive place, but hey, you're worth it right? The building looks like a mansion and inside, the decor doesn't disappoint. The secret to any first class hotel is service and the Ritz-Carlton SF may have written the book on giving good service. Everyone smiles at you, they are helpful and seem to actually like what they are doing - rare indeed, these days of full employment! Little things like great soap, shampoo (I grabbed about 6 small bottles and hoard it for myself at home) and the fluffiest towels this side of home. The location is great too. A short walk to Chinatown and the cable car line. If money isn't a problem (I was on expense account) you got to go.
