This was another of those wonderful New Zealand Top 10 parks with accommodation to suit everyone. Those with campervans will use the powered sites, cabins will suit others, while motel units offer modern self-contained accommodation with kitchen facilities.
We settled on a motel room. It was a very attractive unit. The kitchen came with a stove, microwave, refrigerator and table and four chairs. Milo, tea, coffee, salt and pepper were provided. A nice touch was the coffee percolator with plunger coffee. There was a lounge, TV, heater, and a double and a single bed with electric mattresses. The modern bathroom had a toilet, shower, handbasin, hairdryer, and heater.
The location of the park is magical. It is adjacent to idyllic Lake Te Anau, just a short step away from shops and restaurants, and the wharf, which serves lake cruise craft and boats to Te Anau caves. The office opens 7am-9pm in summer and 8am-8pm in winter. A wide range of information is available and hosts Ken and Heather McChlery will book all local activities. Bikes are available for local touring, and fishing opportunities are just a few metres away.
We found this an ideal base for a trip into Milford Sound and would have been happy to stay longer so that we could have explored more of the local area.
Price: cabins NZ$42; tourist flats NZ$80; motel units NZ$90; powered sites NZ$11.50/adult.
