Ashlee House

I booked in Ashlee House directly with their website, very useful by the way! When I arrived, I instantly felt welcomed, the staff were very nice and friendly, the place looked really comfortable and with some interesting fashion furniture.
The rooms are fine, I stayed in one of the female dorms, very nice, they provide all the bed stuff, pillow, and duvet cover.

There is a common room, where they showed some movies every night, and then you have the chance to meet a lot of people. One good thing is that the hostel is not too big, so you can easily meet people, and is not too small, so you can easily have your own personal space.

The kitchen is lovely, the breakfast guys are really nice and funny, breakfast is provided by the hostel, and then there is a self catering kitchen very well equipped so you can prepare your own meals, this saves you a lot of money at the end.

At the reception the staff are really helpful showing you the best and economic ways for seeing this city! They give you really good advice, help you with fast track tickets for most of the top attractions. The location is great! Kings Cross is a very well connected station! From Heathrow I just took the Tube directly and it took me 45 minutes only! No changes, there is also direct trains from Luton and Gatwick Airports. A lot of tube lines and buses are in this station. And the area is at walking distances of many attractions such as the British Museum, the British Library, St. Paul's Cathedral, Madame Tussuad's, Camden Town, and then just 10 minutes by bus or underground from Piccadilly circus and Trafalgar Square!

All I wanted was a really good budget accommodation, and I certainly found it! Now every time I go to London I book in Ashlee House!

This youth hostel in London is fab: great staff, great location, great lounge areas, and a self-catering kitchen! The rooms are a little small, but for budget accommodation in London, Ashlee House is not bad.

One of the really nice things I liked is the staff. They suggested some great walks covering all of London, like the British Museum, Big Ben, St Paul's Buckingham Palace, etc. They also had a lot of suggestions for doing things for FREE. They recommended Primrose Hill, which is not far from Ashlee House, to have a free fantastic view of London.

Overall, I think Ashlee House had everything you need for a budget traveler; it was clean, in a great location, etc. I would highly recommend it.

Ashlee House Backpackers

We stayed at Ashlee House for a week (£90) in an eight-bed dorm.

Location-wise, Kings Cross is very close to most of London’s major tourist areas and entertainment areas, without being bang in the middle of one place. Which is perfect, as most days we went to different areas, and real London is places like Camden, Islington and Smithfields, not touristy Oxford Street.

The hostel is…well…different. Funky reception (like some Schrager hotel) leads to basic dorm rooms. Nice lounge downstairs and large self-catering kitchen.

Big plus is the crowd, mostly European and friendly. So if one wanted to, there were people to go out with most nights.

On the down side, the showers are pretty bad, and remember to bring your own towels, as they charge £1 to hire a clean towel. Also, if you’re female, make it clear if you want a female dorm.

Overall, I am resoundingly neutral about this place. I appreciate that it is fairly cheap, but some of the facilities did not make me particularly happy. But certainly it wasn't terrible, and it's quite possible that it is a far better value than other places in London.

We chose to stay in a 4-bed room, which was tiny. My bed was not particularly comfortable, and since it was a top bunk (and they assign your bunk, so you can't choose) with a low metal railing at both ends, it was too short for me (and I'm only 5'10").

The showers were another area of concern. The showers are very limited in function: you press this button, and water comes shooting out of the showerhead for a limited amount of time. You can't adjust the temperature, or the water's aim. In one shower, it was cold at first. I pressed the thing again, and it was still cold, but warming up by the time it stopped again. I repeated this process until I was racing to finish because it was getting very hot. For another shower, the water never warmed up. In my last shower, it was hot right away, and only got hotter. It was actually way, way too hot for me, and I had to leave the shower door open and jump in and out. Which was quite terrible considering that the shower was actually one of 4 in the shower room, and anyone could have walked in and seen the naked me running from the steaming water. All a bit of a mess.

The breakfast was okay: a bowl of cereal, two pieces of toast (brown or white), jam, butter, and tea or coffee.

The security of the place I'm unsure about. They have a locked luggage room, but it's just a big room with everyone's stuff, and the key is kept at the front desk where anyone can go pick it up and go through the stuff in the room. So. We left our stuff in our room, and nothing was ever taken, although the last night there we realized that we were using different codes to enter our room. I wondered if the door wasn't even locked, but actually it just turned out you could put any code you want in, and it would open. This was confirmed by the fact that this morning I was still in bed and my friend was in the shower, when I heard a code being entered and the door open, and looked up to see some young guy standing there. He happily flipped the light on, and then turned around and stared at me in confusion, then looked at my friend's bed, then laughed out loud, turned the light off and left.

On the definite upside, it was a clean enough place. Though there's no common room and everyone just hovers around the reception area.

We stayed in Ashlee House hostel. It is very conveniently situated 5 minutes from King''s Cross station and was easy enough to get to. We found the place through hostelworld.com and got a great deal at £10 per night in a dormitory.

The rooms are basic and clean, and breakfast was "continental," that is toast, cereal, coffee and tea - as much as you like! The guy serving at breakfast is great and very funny if you can understand his Irish accent. The place is quite quiet and laid back - they don''t have a bar - but you can find most people socializing in the self-catering kitchen or reception area.
