Peaceful Stay in Sedona

  • March 31, 2009

I stayed 3 nights at the Sky Ranch Lodge and loved every minute of it! I stayed in a room with a kitchenette, a gas fireplace and a deck with the most breath taking views of the red rocks. It was so relaxing to sit out on the deck high above all the noise of the city. The beds were very nice. There were alot of great hiking trails surrounding the lodges grounds. I would recommend this spot to anyone. I plan on returning to Sedona next year and will be staying at the Sky Ranch Lodge. It's the best deal in Sedona!

Value Priced - Great Location

You know how sometimes when you shop based on price, especially with lodging, you really do not know if you're going to be happy with your choice? Going into this particular overnight stay, I was especially concerned because the room rate was about $20 less that others that I found for the same date, and published reviews were somewhat mixed. Once checked in, however, we were very pleased with Sky Ranch Lodge and the location high above the city at the Sedona Airport.

This small motel style "lodge" was comprised of approximately 25 four unit buildings, most of which were single level making it especially nice with the low to the ground profile in a place where the unobstructed views beyond your window is what we were looking for. Granted, we were in a "garden view" room which did not provide the beauty of the red rocks beyond the property; it was still a very pleasant and peaceful view from our room at the backside of the property. The trickling water sounds of the fountains were an especially nice touch, especially when it was time to go to bed.

We have a room with a king bed. It was nicely decorated and with the usual features like an in-room coffee maker with premium coffee and some very nice tea selections, a hair blow dryer and all the necessary bathroom toiletries (shampoo, hand lotion and soaps). The only thing that would have added to our stay would have been a mini-fridge. At $80/night rack rate, we were very happy with our experience and the value received.

For guests staying at Sky Ranch Lodge, there is a nice discount available on the Pink Jeep Broken Arrow tour. Normally a $75+tax for adults, we did it for $131. Thank you Sky Ranch Lodge!

Worst Customer Service I've Ever Experienced!

We had to file a complaint with the better business bureau regarding the Sky Ranch Lodge. They have an UNSATISFACTORY record with the BBB. We had so many problems and inconveniences with them, and the supposed "management" could not have cared less, actually writing back bold-faced lies in their response to our complaint.

We stayed at the SRL around 02/17/08 and the problems began almost immediately. When we checked into our room with a supposed "Partial View of the Red Rocks" we were sadly disappointed to learn we could only see one good rock from our room. Everything else was blocked by trees. When we complained the SRL responded saying there were only "2 defoliated trees." Please...

The back balconies are not private and we continually had other guests walking back and forth across our balcony. Very disruptive and loud.

After 5 minutes in the shower my girlfriend's shower ran cold and she hurried up to get out. Not knowing she had gotten out from a cold shower I jumped in and was shocked to find no hot water. While the maintenance person came quick, he had to bang around in the bathroom for about 10 minutes only to come out and say that somehow the hot water regulator was turned down lower than usual, possibly by a previous guest. I doubt any guest would have the interest in turning DOWN the hot water. After complaining to management we were given excuse after excuse with not even a single apology. It wasn't their fault according to them. They said they had a "40 gallon instant recovery tank." If that's true then it was defective. Management even had the gall to write to the BBB and say that they had to turn the hot water UP HIGHER THAN NORMAL FOR US! Can you believe that? The maintenance guy himself said it was turned down below normal.

Next, immediately after the maintenance person left, the room smelled of smoke. We came to the conclusion that he lit up a cigarette outside our room. It completely filled up our room with the stench of smoke, and we were already aggravated from having to get out of cold showers. The hotel responded saying that maybe another guest lit up outside our room right after the maintenance left and that the employees follow strict rules on designated smoking areas. I seriously doubt that as late, dark, and cold as it was, and after banging around in our bathroom for 10 minutes that the maintenance person would have taken the time to walk to a "designated smoking area."

As cold as it was in Sedona, all we honestly wanted was to have a nice, hot shower and relax before our Grand Canyon tour the next day. The Sky Ranch Lodge could not deliver. One night manager made excuses when we complained, while the day manager offered us 10% off our bill. The 10% would not even cover the tax we paid on the room and was quite insulting. Why should we pay for a cold shower, a smoke filled room, a deceptive view of "a rock", and a balcony that according to the Sky Ranch Lodge, was a "public facility." We paid for a view that anyone could walk across and see. Honestly the drive up to the hotel had a view a million times better than the room itself. Maybe that's why so many people were walking across our balcony. Maybe their views were just as mundane as ours.

Sky Ranch Lodge: great concept w/ the hotel up on the mesa; however, old outdated rooms, wifi that cuts in and out, cold showers, crappy views in the "partial views," and the worst part of all...customer service that doesn't give a damn. Never again will I visit this place, and I hope that you take the time to read the other complaints about this hotel regarding customer service and other issues and find a nicer hotel in beautiful Sedona. We would have had better service at a Days Inn.

Thanks for taking the time to read this everyone. Good luck if you stay here! You'll need it!

Sky Ranch Lodge

The Sky Ranch Lodge is the hotel that time may have forgot. Whilst construction and development continues unabated in the valley below, the Sky Ranch is a modest two-storey motel-like resort that could easily pass as a retirement community. Accommodations are spread out over six acres and while the website boasts of their pool, spa, gardens and proximity to the airport, Sky Ranch’s real coup is that it sits 500 feet above the town and offers panoramic views up to 75 miles away.

We arrived on a busy Saturday afternoon and after checking in, drove around the corner to our room. We unloaded and walked up the exterior stairs as our room was on the second level. The lodge offers three genres of rooms: Red Rock views, Partial Red Rock Views and Garden Views. Ours was technically a Partial Red Rock View room out the back from our balcony but if you opened the front door it was pretty much a full Red Rock view all the way.

Our room was large and comfortable as was the bathroom, but the interior was noticeably dated by muted 1980s era wallpaper. Outside the buildings looked overdue for a paint job.

As we only stayed at the lodge for one night it was unfortunate that we didn’t have time to check out facilities such as the outdoor swimming pool and the pretty gardens. In the time we did have we were preoccupied with hiking down the hill to a vortex spot and making it back to the lookout in time for the sunset.

About a ten minute walk down the road is a hill that not only affords great views across the valley but it also touted as an energy vortex. When we arrived a couple of people were sat cross-legged in meditation and we somewhat tactlessly proceeded to step around them, snapping photos in every direction. We sat for a while but couldn’t honestly say that we felt any kind of different "energy" flowing through us. After ten minutes of energy searching, we sped back up the hill to join the multitudes watch the sunset. If you’re looking for a romantic spot, I’d advise staying in the spot down the hill where you have 10, as opposed to 100 people for company. There was also an old gentleman at the larger lookout accepting "donations" from people that went towards the upkeep of the viewpoint area. It seemed a bit of a swindle to try and charge for the upkeep of a view but it’s not mandatory and it’s easy enough to enter the area from the side as opposed to the centre where the collection box is.

Back in our room we got ready to head back into Sedona for dinner, which is about a five-minute drive from the hotel. I slept well that night in the expansive king bed and the next morning I was relieved to discover that activity at the neighbouring airport didn’t start until around 8am.

Rooms are nicely appointed with refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and coffee pots. Each room has sliding glass doors out to a private patio or deck; some have fireplaces. There are about 8 rooms that have decks which are literally at the mesa edge and they provide the best views in Sedona. In fact, this mesa is one of the spots locals come to view the sunset; from the rooms looking west, you have the same unbeatable view right from your own deck. (There is also a vortex right on the road on the way up to the motel.) There is also a pool and spa. It is one of Sedona''s best kept lodging secrets.
