The age-old question...To stay in Venice or outside of Venice? On a recent trip, leading a group of 10 people, we opted to stay outside of Venice. We found a small hotel in Marghera, the first town on the mainland from Venice. The Villa Graziella is a charming, small hotel. It has only 14 rooms. This means no large, noisy school groups to disturb your sleep. The neighborhood is quiet, but convenient to public transportation.
Each room has its own bathroom (with shower or tub), television, telephone, and air conditioning. Many Italian hotels charge extra for air-conditioned rooms, a must for the summer months. The shower is classic Italian--a showerhead in the middle of the bathroom, with a shower curtain on a rail around it. The Villa Graziella also gets points for having real sized towels.
Breakfast is served in a charming room, and features a soft bread I've found nowhere else except in Marghera. There is a selection of jams, butter, or other toppings for your bread. You can choose between coffee, tea, cappuccino, or hot chocolate. Amazingly, water was offered to guests, and each guest was given a cold bottle of water to take for the day.
The hotel features a small garden that would be perfect for a sharing a bottle of wine on a warm evening.
There is a small parking lot for guests, with a locking gate. Guests are given a key to the gate so you may come and go as you please. There was ample street parking. Our 16 passenger bus was able to park right in front of the hotel.
Just a block from the hotel is a main road with a public bus that will take you right to the Piazzale Roma in Venice. You can also catch the train to Venice. The train station is about a 1/2 mile from the hotel.
The staff is friendly, and Serena gave us an excellent recommendation for a local place to eat.
