Pahio, Bali Hai Villas

Best Things Nearby:
Princeville Shopping Center, the town of Hanalei and Hanalei Bay. The bar at nearby Hanalei Resort is very nice with some of the best views of the bay and a local hangout.

Best Things About the Resort:
The location, right near the Princeville golf course, and the freshwater (no chlorination) swimming pool and spa is absolutely fantastic.

Resort Experience:
You can wade into the pool from the sand 'beach', which extends into the fresh water pool. The spa has a sand bottom also. There is a waterfall at one end of the pool, and the rooms are large and well appointed. It is a great place to visit, and even greater to own.

You check in at the airport on arrival and get your unit number and key. This allows you to stop and purchase groceries, etc., on the way to the unit without having to go back out right away once you arrive. Once here, it is easy to see why the Pahio Bali Hai Villas is a RCI Gold Crown Resort. Fantastic!

Best Things Nearby:
This condo is located in Princeville, a beautiful community. It is close to wonderful beaches, golf courses, views of the breathtaking NaPali coast, Kilaua Light House, and the exquisite Princeville Hotel.

Best Things About the Resort:
We found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. It took them no time at all to make us feel like part of a family. The grounds are beautifully manicured and make you feel like you really are in the midst of paradise. The unit was well-maintained, stocked, clean, and it took us very little time to feel like were at home.

Resort Experience:
We had purchased a unit at Bali Hai three years ago and this has been our first opportunity to return to our home unit. It is everything (and more) we remember. The pool is especially nice - waterfall cascading into the pool, one part a sand bottom, another waterfall ending in a 'hot pool'. We wondered if we were really under a Hawaiian waterfall and not a pool!

The scenery was beautiful around the resort. From our Lanai we enjoyed beautiful tropical foliage and could hear the waves in the distance. We look forward to returning again.

We stayed in a very attractive and comfortable 2-bedroom condo that overlooked a wonderfully planned swimming pool. In the distance, you could see the ocean and, to the left, the mountains. We watched birds frolicking, saw beautiful tropical plants, and were dazzled by beautiful rainbows. Nearby were wonderful places to hike, snorkel, and dine. And the sunsets were spectacular. The island is very small, so we were able to visit the entire island.

Pahio at Bali Hai Villas

Best Things Nearby:
Great scenery. A secluded upscale neighborhood. A golf course that seems to run through the whole town. Cliffs to watch sunrises and sunsets from. Grocery store and shops about five minutes away. Town of Hanalei with more shops and activity centers about 15 minutes away. Several excellent beaches within 5 to 30 minutes of driving.

Best Things About the Resort:
Bright rooms with adequate amenities, including private laundry facility.

Resort Experience:
Pahio at Bali Hai was not my first choice for our visit to Kauai in the summer of 2002 because its photos on RCI directory did not appear that appealing. However, after I visited Pahio’s website and saw its floor plans and photos of rooms, I was impressed with the clean and bright appearance. I called Pahio reservation about a month before check-in date and asked for a room with a nice view. The representative politely obliged to do her best.

I was not disappointed when I arrived in Kauai. First of all, you can check in at the airport, get your key, and drive right to your unit. To get to the resort, you drive through the beach towns of the east, lush green forests along the north shore, and then through an upscale neighborhood of Princeville, of which I am sure the houses are worth millions of dollars. Although I did not have the ocean view I had hoped for, our unit faced the green Princeville golf course with the backdrop of mountains. The property is about a half mile away from the sea cliffs and did not have a very good ocean view anyway.

The rooms were truly bright, decorated by whitewashed rattan furnishings with pastel colored fabrics. Our unit was equipped with its own laundry facility, which was great because we used it almost everyday due to beach activities. Each room came with its own TVs and the living room also had a VCR and a stereo system with a CD player. Kitchen equipment and facility were all new, adding to the pleasantness. A balcony outside of the living room had a table large enough to accommodate five of us, although we had to bring out an extra chair from the inside. We had many breakfasts and lunches there.

Plenty of activities were offered, both educational and recreational. They had a slide presentation of ocean’s ecosystem, scuba demonstrations, a round of golf, and even a yoga class, to list a few. They also organized a potluck for all the guests of several Pahio resorts in Princeville with free Mai Tai drinks, Hawaiian musicians, a hula dancer, and raffles. The best thing about this resort was, however, its situation in the most beautiful town in Kauai--Princeville. If you ever get to stay in the area, take a stroll along its golf course or to the nearby cliffs around sunrise or sunset and you may wish you were there to stay for the rest of your life.

Queens Hotel

Queens Hotel

It’s not the poshest hotel in town, if for posh you intend 5 stars, but it’s for sure the most charming of them all: it’s the Queens Hotel, an old country house overlooking lerwick harbour and the Isle of Bressay which was turned into a hotel in the 1860’s. The official stars are only 3, but the hotel offers all the services of a 4 star hotel – the price for a room, in fact, is just the same as another local 4 star hotel, which is neither so charming nor has such lovely views. What I liked about the Queens was my room overlooking the harbour – and the cry of the seagulls that woke me up in the morning: it felt like following nature’s time, not watch time. Another plus of the hotel is the restaurant, one of Lerwick’s best. It specialises in fresh seafood – the grilled wild salmon steak is particularly delicious.
