Best Things Nearby:
The beach and many restaurants and shops

Best Things About the Resort:
Location is right on the beach

Resort Experience:
Costa de Oro is a beach hotel in the middle of the "Zona Dorado" in Mazatlan. We stayed here during Christmas week. There are three sections to the resort - a hotel section, a newer condo tower, and an older condo tower. We had a one-bedroom unit in the newer tower, as well as a studio unit in the older tower.

The one-bedroom unit is spacious and has white tile throughout. The TV is small and basic, as is the kitchen. However, it is adequate. There is a sleeper sofa in the living area. The balcony overlooks the pool area and has a great view. The bedroom has two comfy full-size beds and a small closet.

The studio unit is a bit smaller, and of course does not have a separate living area. However, the view from the balcony was directly overlooking the ocean - a fabulous scene to wake-up to.

This is a full-service hotel, even for timeshare vacationers. There is daily maid service and they will offer you a timeshare presentation. However, they weren't pushy when it was clear we weren't going to buy. Plus, you get free gifts for attending the presentation. There are daily activities at the hotel, although we didn't participate.

They have a fairly large pool, although the water was a bit cold around Christmas time. The ocean is great. There are also lounge chairs overlooking the ocean on their pool patio, so you don't actually have to be down on the beach. They have an upscale restaurant but their prices are reasonable and the dishes are good. There are other resort hotels next door, so you can walk down the beach for a change of scenery (or pool, if desired).

You're right in the heart of the tourist zone and there are many restaurants/bars/shops within walking distance. Most have very reasonable prices - you can buy a filet mignon meal for $10 U.S. A pulmonia, or open-air taxi, will take you almost anywhere you want to go for 50 pesos or less.

The ride into Old Town Mazatlan is worth the trip, if only for the pulmonia ride along the waterfront. You can stock up on groceries at Gigante supermarket, about a 5- to 10-minute ride, or go to Gran Shopping Plaza - a large shopping mall nearby.

Overall, this is a great beach hotel in the middle of the Golden Zone.

Best Things About the Resort:
Fabulous pool, beach and staff

Resort Experience:
The sunsets from all of Mazatlan are fabulous, but from the balcony of the room, they were beyond belief. The staff went out of their way to provide every comfort and the beauty of the hotel area was superior.
