Won't Stay Here Again...

As mentioned by others, don't bring a car as everything is an easy walk and parking is limited anyway; that said, the location is good as long as you are aware it's a 'mature' street that's really not suitable for kids, and is situated right next to 3 bars, 3 strip/topless joints, a sex shop, and a couple of liquor stores. If you're OK with this, it is well located, otherwise stay somewhere else. If you're a guy walking down the street alone, expect to be offered a good time...

Anyway, the resort itself is tired and after several decades, they still have a sales office open - they even wanted us to move out one afternoon so they could show our unit (we declined). At first glance it looks OK and the cleanliness of service is good - however, the cleaning staff will not return if you miss their schedule. What becomes apparent is that nothing gets repaired (eg rusting vents in the bathroom, outlets falling out of walls, broken light fixtures, bare wires, etc.) implying little gets spent on maintenance. The biggest issue we faced, for most of the week, which made the stay miserable, was a roof air conditioner above the room being bad and literally shaking the main bedroom to the point of not being able to sleep. Calls to management to get it fixed or us relocated fell on indifferent and deaf ears and we got a variety of 'stories' to placate us. The manager was always 'on a break' when we asked to talk to her as apparently she's the only person in the lobby who has the power to do anything, and she never called back as promised. Eventually they offered to move us the day before we were due to check out so we declined as we wanted to spend the day in NO, not moving. All in all, it seems that staff found our complaints annoying rather than something they needed to act on.

On the surface it looks OK; three rooms in a reasonable state of decor but look closely and you see the dirty carpets and peeling decor. The kitchen lacks an oven and a few basics but is adequate in context given there's no room to support entertaining. There is no proper wardrobe space (our master had a small closet in the bathroom shared with the vacuum, ironing board etc..), no nightstands, no lights accessible from the bed, missing TV remotes, doors hanging off etc. Overall, it's scruffy and needs a lot of fixing up and is obvious to anyone so there's no excuse really. As to the vermin noted in other reviews, you'll see rat poison blocks lying in the corners of the kitchen and you'll see mice scurrying around in the evenings. Don't let kids pick these up and eat them - there is a health real hazard to having these blocks exposed and someone runs the real risk of being poisoned.

There are many steps everywhere so most rooms are not disabled accessible so check if this is a concern. All reception events were cancelled without notice. No real concierge help was available. All in all, this is a dreadful place we will never return to and urge you to do the same unless you have low standards.

Best Things Nearby:
French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, River Walk, French Market, Harrah's Casino, Mardi Gras World.

Best Things About the Resort:
Location, location, location. Sits right between Bourbon Street and the River Walk. Within walking distance to all activities in the French Quarter.

Resort Experience:
The Quarter House is within walking distance to all activities in the French Quarter. The units are somewhat small for most timeshares, but comfortable. The resort did not offer many ammenities or activities. They had a free contintental breakfast on the weekend, a wine/cheese party one evening and a cooking class. There was a $15 charge for the cooking class, but we did not attend the cooking class because we were busy sight seeing.

The staff was very helpful and friendly; daily housekeeping was provided at no additional charge. The desk called us the night before check out to arrange taxi service for us to the airport.

Due to the resort's location, a car is not necessary. We chose to walk to almost all sites, although we did use a public bus and street car. There is also a free ferry to take you across the river to visit Mardi Gras World. Resort location is very important in New Orleans; we would advise staying at a resort within the French Quarter. The resort offers parking for $15/day if needed. Parking is about a block away. There are many restaurants within a few blocks that range from $8 to $50 per meal.

I would advise not eating at the restaurants on Bourbon Street. The atmosphere was exciting, but the food was better away from Bourbon Street. You must stop at Cafe du Monde for a beignet and the Central Grocery for a muffuletta.

There are many tour companies offering city, swamp and plantation tours. We chose to take a city and swamp tour. Both were very informative and enjoyable. We also took a two hour tour down the Mississippi river on the Steamer Natchez. It was a relaxing ride that explained the value of ports along the Mississippi. Be sure to look for discount coupons for restaurants and tours. Check on the internet or get them from the Visitors Bureau before you go.

Best Things Nearby:
Harrah's Casino, Bourbon Street, Decatur Street, Audobon Aquarium and the Riverwalk.

Best Things About the Resort:
Located in the first block off of Canal Street, this resort wins hands down for best locality to several fine restaurants, just two streets over from Bourbon Street, and 2.5 blocks from the riverwalk where the Aquarium, Harrah's Casino, and the Canal Shoppes awaits you. I was there for seven days and only drove my car once.

Resort Experience:
The Quarter House don't have a parking garage, but use one nearby. It costs $15 a day and that's a discount! It was only a block away, but when it's raining, even that's too far. There aren't many amenities or activities located on-site due to so much going around the area. We were there during a tropical storm and experienced a lot of rainfall. As a result of the rain, the old but lavishly restored building had two mice come in out of the rain into my unit on the fourth floor. The front desk provided me with sticky board and I caught them myself. However, they did come and take them away for me. After the sun came out, we didn't have a problem anymore.

I would suggest staying here if you want to be close to everything and don't want to bother with transportation. Otherwise, with a slight inconvenience of no parking garage attached, it can be a problem when it's raining. They also charge $.75 to use one washer and dryer located in the laundry room. On Saturday-Monday mornings, continental breakfast is served. Maid service is provided every day as well, which was very nice.

Best Things Nearby:
The French Quarter, the Garden District, tons of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and the Mississippi River.

Best Things About the Resort:
The front desk people were very friendly. Our bellman was very accommodating upon check-in.

Resort Experience:
The suite was beyond New Orleans shabby elegance, which can be quite charming in the French Quarter. Room was cramped and not in very good condition. Appliances were dented, scratched, and stained. A bathroom cabinet appeared to be falling from the ceiling! The most unfortunate experience we had was theft from our locked room! Unfortunately, management seemed quite unconcerned. As a result we felt the need to leave two days early.

The very best part of the hotel was our own personal suite mouse, which stayed with us the entire time! We felt it was probably an ancestor from generations who have lived in the nether regions of the hotel. It was quite cute, ate very little--a few kernals of popcorn, some nuts, and a bit of broccoli--and left no noticeable mess.

All in all, while we had a wonderful time in New Orleans. We would not stay at the Quarter House again and would advise RCI that they do not come close to deserving a 'Resort of International Distinction' rating.
