Sunset Lagoon and Marina.

  • March 21, 2004
  • Rated 5 of 5 by MartS from Richmond Hill, Ontario
Best Things Nearby:
Beaches, marina on site, spa on site, and close to all downtown Cancun amenities, including public transport if needed, which is very good.

Best Things About the Resort:
Service was great all round. The all-inclusive meals, the quality of the food, cleanliness, friendliness, and the size of the units are all five-star. This is not a huge resort and the staff really takes care of you. It is tranquil but yet has live entertainment at nights. You have the full use of the sister resort on the beach side, Royal Sunset, which is just a short boat or bus ride (five or six minutes) and all-inclusive use of all their restaurants and facilities as well. It's the best of both with one timeshare. Staff gave amazing massages were in huts on the beach.

Resort Experience:
This was probably one of our best vacations. We were very pleasantly surprised at how excellent our service, accommodation, and food were. The staff couldn't do enough to ensure we had an excellent time. Every other Caribbean destination (three of them) that we have been to, we have stayed in Gold Crowns as well and the service not up to scratch -- we kept getting told that everything is on Caribbean time. Well, this place is like being in paradise, but with First World service. You are in for a treat and as far as I am concerned, do not need to look for another Caribbean destination to go to each year.

With respect to service, they ensured that we had the accommodation we wanted -- we were booked for a two-bedroom unit, but did not expect it to have a full second bedroom studio lockout. This did not suite us with a one- and four-year-old, so they bent over backwards and succeeded in giving us a unit that was suitable for us. Our two-bedroom unit must have been 1200-1300 sq. ft. It was five-star accommodation -- very clean, well presented, daily maid service, marble bathrooms, and daily stocked bar fridge in room. It was a large spacious unit. The presentation in bathrooms and bedrooms included carnations made of tissue paper and swans made from the towels and bedsheets. There was a jacuzzi tub on the balcony and three bathrooms in two-bedroom units. Our unit overlooked the lagoon with sunset views.

This resort will cater to as relaxed and inactive as you want to be, or as busy and active that you would like to be, for singles, families, or couples. It has something for everyone.

Best Things Nearby:
It seems like everything is nearby or a short bus ride away. The beach and scuba diving are across the street. Clubs are within walking distance.

Best Things About the Resort:
The best thing about this resort is its size. It is not huge, but not too small either. Everyone gets to know you and it’s quiet!

Resort Experience:
The people are nice, the food is good, and the rooms are great. It’s a good place to go if you want to relax. Everything you need is right there in the hotel. We went scuba diving from there and we took day trips.

The hotel is like an old style villa. It feels like you have stepped back in time. All the buildings are white and have an old feel, but when you walk into your room, you have everything you need.

Best Things Nearby:
Mayan ruins, local shopping, beach, nightlife.

Best Things About the Resort:
Excellent selection of food at the buffets and two a la carte Italian restaurants, kayaking, and nightly entertainment/activities.

Resort Experience:
Sunset Lagoon is located on the lagoon side of Cancun. I was a bit concerned that it was not on the ocean side and without a beach, but if a beach is what you want, it’s available at the sister resort, Royal Sunset. While the beaches are beautiful, they are crowded, so it was nice to be at Sunset Lagoon for a little peace and quiet.

Initially, the room we checked into was noisy and missing the Jacuzzi tub on the balcony, but we were quickly moved to a quieter location and enjoyed the Jacuzzi on the balcony many an evening.

The hotel was beautiful and clean, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and service was excellent.

The food at both the buffets and at both a la carte restaurants was excellent and afforded many choices.

We hope to return to Sunset Lagoon!!!

Best Things Nearby:
Carlos 'n' Charlies is very close! There are grocery stores within walking distance.

Don't buy anything at the resort since it will always be more expensive. The bar and disco area is really close, but you may want to catch a bus to get there.

Best Things About the Resort:
This resort is on the lagoon side (across the street from the beach). The resort is all-inclusive, but it is great because you can have breakfast early if you want and then spend the whole day on the beach at the sister resort Royal Sunset. There will be a ferry taking you to the other resort with no charge and it only takes five minutes to be there. If you want to kick back and relax, this is a great option because the lagoon is beautiful. And you have the option to go to the Royal Sunset to spend some time on the beach.

In the afternoon, you can come back and have lunch -- the menu is great! They offer local meals or international meals, plus all the beverages are included too!

So after lunch, you might want to go shopping. There are a lot of malls and you can find anything from tequila shot glasses to fine jewelry.

Then you can come back to the resort and have dinner to get ready for the party night!!!

Resort Experience:
The resort is not a big place, but it is very pretty! They will receive you with a fresh piña coladas when you come from the airport. They have really good customer service. I didn't see any activities at the resort, but that's because I spent all the time touring. The lagoon is really nice and big. You will get a welcome party on a boat in the lagoon, which is actually really nice.

The units at this place are really clean and comfortable.

The accommodations were somewhat of a disappointment compared to other places we have stayed. We had to climb stairs to get to the bedroom and the bathroom. We could not sleep after 6am as it was very noisy with people walking by the unit and talking loudly, as well as workers yelling at one another. The food was sometimes very good, but sometimes, it was sort of bland or contained spices that we did not like.
