Royal Mayan Resort

  • October 31, 2006
  • Rated 5 of 5 by mgs2006 from Louisville, Kentucky
The Royal Mayan Resort in Cancun is one of five Royal Resorts located there. In many respects it is the best of the Royals.

The Resort has two hundred well kept timeshare villas, each consisting of two bedrooms, two baths, a living room, dining area, fully equipped kitchen and most have a balcony overlooking the pool area, beach and ocean. The master bedroom has a king size bed, the second bedroom has twin double beds and the living room has two twin size Murphy beds. Full details on the villas can be found at www.royalresorts.com/mayan.stm.

The Royal Mayan shares a beautiful beach and other facilities with two other Royal Resorts, the Royal Caribbean and the Royal Islander. Also, the facilities of the nearby Royal Sands, including its full service spa, are available as are the facilities of Vacation Club International, located close to downtown.

The Royal Mayan has the best formal and informal restaurants of any of the five Royal Resorts. The El Conquistador restaurant is for fine dining serving international cuisine, seafood and steaks in a smart casual setting and at moderate prices with great early bird specials. The La Palapa poolside restaurant has a fantastic breakfast buffet and full lunch and dinner menu. It is very casual and even has a swim up bar.

The Royal Mayan is across the street from Captain's Cove Marina and Restaurant. The restaurant overlooks the lagoon and is reasonably priced. Its breakfast buffet is even better than that at La Palapa.

Each villa is designed for six people. The second bedroom is a lock-off unit and can be used by itself. It has its own bath, TV and a small refrigerator. The remainder of the Villa is contained in the suite portion and has the master bedroom as well as living room, dining area, kitchen and master bath. The deck can be accessed from either part.

You can buy or rent units (Villas for 6, Suites for 4 or bedrooms for 2) from the Resort or at great savings from private owners using web sites like the one sponsored by the Timeshare User's Group (http://tug2.net). Also www.mexicondo.com; www.redweek.com or many other sites offer rental and purchase opportunities. Savings range from 25% to over 50%.

Royal Mayan guests have access to its sports facilities including the pool, tennis courts, shuffleboard court and more. Beach towels, snorkeling gear and tennis rackets are available at no cost. There is an on-site grocery store, travel agency and car rental agency and next door at the Royal Caribbean is a bigger grocery store and other shops.

Of the Royal Mayan, Royal Caribbean and Royal Islander, the Royal Mayan is the oldest. So why do I like it the best?
It is well kept, has twin sinks in the master bath, has more wood trim and is warmer than the other two. Its restaurants are the best of all five Royals. It is closest to the road and Captain's Cove.

I'd go on, but I am outofwords!

Best Things Nearby:
Everything's close - nightlife, shopping malls, and even Wal-Mart!

Best Things About the Resort:
There is a friendly staff, it is very clean, and everything you need is there. The pools are gorgeous! There is daily maid service, too.

Resort Experience:
The Royal Resorts (all of them) have two-bedroom condos with full kitchens and large terraces. The Royal Mayan, Caribbean, and Islander are all in a row, so just wander among them to decide which pool area or restaurant to go to that day.

The staff is friendly and responsive. Everything is well maintained and clean. The on-site restaurants are good (the palapa at the Mayan is the most casual and least expensive). You can order anything to go and also get good ribs, roast chicken, salads, etc., at the Tradewinds Express in the Royal Caribbean.

There are lots of low-key activities, like lotteria (Mexican bingo), blackjack, painting, crafts, and dance lessons, or you can tour ruins, snorkel, or just relax and hang out. It is great for families, couples, groups… anyone. All of my ratings are excellent.

Best Things About the Resort:
all the organized parties are fun. The pools and rooms are so nice.

Resort Experience:
The Royal Mayan is just heavenly. There are three other Royal resorts right next door, but the Mayan is the only one in the RCI system. I wish the others were, so we might have a better chance to exchange into them. I try to go every year with our family, grandparents, children, and grandchildren. We all have a wonderful, beautiful, relaxing time on the lovely beaches and enjoying the cool ocean breezes at night. The entire resort is nothing short of beautiful.

Royal Mayan rooms are spacious, lovely, and always clean.

The service is incredible, as they are always helpful and trying to please the guests, even the children. The staff members have been there sometimes for many years. The company treats their workers well, it appears.

Best Things Nearby:
The ocean is definitely the best thing nearby!! I would have to say this is one of the world's most beautiful ocean scenes.

Best Things About the Resort:
There was a welcome party upon our arrival, daily activities to take part in, and a Mexican fiesta day complete with tequila and limbo. The staff, especially our concierge, was excellent!!

Resort Experience:
This was our first trip to Cancun and without a doubt one of the most beautiful spots in Mexico. We started off with a welcome party, then straight to the most amazing ocean view. The color is absolutely awe-inspiring.

We had a two-bedroom unit with a full kitchen right on the beach. We ate breakfast every morning on the patio. It was a dream come true!! A few steps and there was the water.

We had plenty of fun-filled days complete with snorkeling lessons, tanning on the beach, beach volleyball, the limbo, a Mexican party. . . We also rented a Jeep for the day and drove down (or up?) to Playa del Carmen. I would not hesitate to stay here again or at any of the Royal resorts. Definitely five-star!!

Best Things Nearby:
The beach which is just a few steps away. The shopping in downtown Cancun. Chichen Itza is a ways a way and takes about a two hours to drive there

Best Things About the Resort:
It is well-kept all around (from room to pool). They have a lot of activities. It has five sister resorts and you can use any of their amenities while staying at the Royal Mayan. I would recomend staying at the Royal Caribbean over the Royal Mayan because it is newer and has a better pool. The Royal Sands is the newest of the Royals but it is not close to the others.

Resort Experience:
The rooms are very nice and are cleaned top to bottom daily. The grounds of the resort are beautiful; there are freeform pools with waterfalls and a swim-up bar. The resort activities are outstanding; there is something to do at any given time during the day. I recommend that you take full advantage of the parties and travel services that the resort provides.
