NH Krystal

The last time we came to Cancun was with party friends, so we planned on staying as close to the action as possible. That’s what NH Krystal hotel is all about: location, location, location. It has its own disco called Christine’s and is on the northern corner as the road in Cancun turns up towards El Centro. It’s by the convention centre, just steps away from the Bulldog Club, Coco Bongo, The City, Daddy O’s, etc., and within easy staggering distance after a night on the town.

When booked separately, this hotel can be between $100 and $180 a night depending on the time of year, but it often comes up on the cheap flight/packages for a much better rate.

We chose not to go all-inclusive, but the NH Krystal can be purchased this way. It usually does work out cheaper, especially if you like to drink, but in doing so, you also miss some really great restaurants, so it’s a personal choice. The rooms were fine, clean, and big, with the usual hard beds that seem to be the Mexican standard.

It is right on the beach, which is part of the Cancun beach, but because the NH Krystal is on a corner, it has rocks separating it from the rest of the beach, thus you almost have your own little section of paradise that tends to only get hotel guests. We loved the swimming pool even though we didn’t use it too often. It had the "infinity" look going on, with a bar with stools in the water, tunnels, lots of lounge chairs, two tennis courts, and many hammocks. BLISS. The reps and hotel staff were friendly, flirtatious, and always made us feel very special.

The trip from the airport to the hotel strip is a short one. Once on this strip, the scene can be enjoyed either by day or night; both are a spectacle well worth viewing. Many years ago, they decided to make Cancun the "in spot" in Mexico, as Acapulco was losing its original fame for many reasons.

All the large and famous hotels had a competition to see who could build the most elaborate hotel to be able to continue to draw in the crowds.

The strip is the result of this competition. You will not see anything like it anywhere else in the world. The design structure of each building is just amazing. Then the landscape and lighting of each garden is enough to take your breath away.

Once you get inside these "wonders of the world," you are greeted with a most elaborate entrance...again, each one more lovely than the other.

If you are not into this and just want to get into some action, each hotel offers a variety of social activities to keep you very busy or that will help you to meet other people. If you decide to visit any of the hotels, hold your head up high and walk through the lobby like you own the hotel. Nobody will trouble you, as long as you are polite and show respect to everyone.

The beaches all have sparkling white sand and the roughness of the sea will depend on what side of the strip your hotel is on.

The rooms are all marble floors (the better to pick up your sand the next day) and simple. The hotel is right on the beach. Service is superior, the staff is solicitous. The pool is amazing and picturesque. The location is nearly to the tip of the peninsula and ideally located next to nearly everything.

Best Things Nearby:
Beach, beach, and beach. Also the shopping, nightlife, restaurants, water sports, and pool.

Best Things About the Resort:
The rooms are oceanfront with an incredible view of the turquoise Caribbean. The pool is great as it winds through the property along the ocean. The pool wall is a drop off to the turquoise Caribbean waters, so it looks as though the pool is a continuation of the ocean. The rooms have marble floors. The two-bedroom is configured with three hotel rooms--the middle room containing a kitchenette and a king bed. One room has a king bed and the other room has two double beds. It is nice if traveling with friends, as the rooms can be closed off if you wish.

Resort Experience:
The service is excellent--they will pamper you. It is a great place to hang out at the pool or beach, but also affords much to do. Most nightclubs are within walking distance (Bull Dogs is on the grounds). Two large shopping malls are also within walking distance, as is the outdoor market where you can bargain for silver, blankets, etc. Wave-runners and other water activities are available on the beach. A warning about spring break: unless you are into the college scene, you may want to stay away during this timeframe. We have also been down during Christmas. It is usually fairly quiet Christmas week and the weather is unbeatable. The resort will arrange for day trips and has car rental on site. I would rent a car only on the days you will be travelling out of the Hotel Zone (e.g., to see the ruins or to go to Xel-Ha or Xcaret). It is good to stop off in town at Sam's or Walmart and stock up on water and amenities at a reasonable price.
